  1. No major road works I'm aware of around Pattaya. Check-out LK Metropole, they have some longer-term units about the same price as Areka and nicer hotel.

Have always walked past it. Seemed too nice! Are they guest friendly?

Humm..."guest friendly"...a hotel smack in one of the main red-light sois in Pattaya. You get one guess  They have some rooms in the B 1500 range.

  2. I would suspect the nearest English pub type place with a weekend roast would be Jameson's, which is actually in a hidden sub-soi behind the Big C in north Pattaya. There are also a couple English pubs on soi 6 (Queen Vic and others) but don't know if they do weekend roasts and rather non-salubrious soi so might not be favored by the misses. (Google them for map/directions). The Naklua fish market is a fresh-seafood market but there may be some seafood restaurants nearby. It's located about 2 kms further down Naklau Road on the right (ocean side). You can't miss it and there is a parking lot...just let the car window down a bit and follow your nose :D

So it is heading towards Dolphin Roundabout from Nahklua Soi 18?

I always thought it was in the opposite direction at the end of Nahklua Road near Mum Aroy?

Sorry, that dreaded "up" and "down" directions strike again; my bad. Yes, it is further along if driving away from the dolphin roundabout (north).

  4. As an aside MRO, what would be the torque limits on the ranger 6speed AT? It's already at 470nm. Can it handle 550-600, which is what chipping would give it.

The T6 Ranger uses the Ford 6R80 6AT (which is actually a ZF box made under license), and is rated to handle 600Nm in standard form (the actual ZF made version has higher torque variants). It's essentially the same box used in all of the 6AT BMW's, Jag XJ/XK/XF, R/R Sport, L/R Discovery, Maserati Quattroporte etc - in additional to a bunch of Ford cars.

I'm not sure whether the 4WD Rangers are using the ZF designed 4WD version of the box, or whether Ford has used their own engineering there though - if still using the ZF design, that would mean the 4WD Ranger shares it's AT with the Bentley Continental GT, amongst others ;)

Thanks, so chip to your hearts content then:)

Wasn't this a thread on changes to the new PJS...how did the subject of transmissions in the Ford Rangers come up

Steering us back towards the PJS, they seem to be promoting some new 2.4L version. I am assuming the "L" is for luxury, so a model with some extra luxury features or is this just marketing hype. Is there anything new here besides what's previously been described in this thread (i.e. Euro 4 emissions)?

  5. I note the management are ignoring the question of ++ in a fast food joint?

With all due respect, we are not fast food. The amount of preparation that goes into each dish is staggering. I will extend an open invitation here today - if you are interested to see our prep kitchen on the 2nd flood, PM me and I will personally take you. For example, the corn is boiled, and then soaked for 10 hours before grinding, and pressing. Then, the tortillas are flash fried and warmed. The meat for the Birria soup is marinated for 18 hours. All of the sauces and salsas are made fresh each morning. How is this fast food?

Come see the operation, I think you'll enjoy the visit. The ++ is so that we can hire, train and maintain high service standards; many of the Thai places I visit seem to have zombies working for them, which is what we try to avoid. All of our branches strive to keep high service standards, although even I will admit more training is needed on our side.

    Best,

    Gil

Completely agree that an operation such as yours is not "fast food." It's a business decision but why not just "hide" the service charge in the item price and avoid the negative Vibe of a 10% service charge?

And good luck teaching Thais what Mexican food should taste and look like when it leaves the kitchen...I know if I had to work in a Thai resto in Frisco, I would be just as clueless.

  6. Now the apologists might cite teething troubles but we are talking about a well oiled machine here. Bangkoks' Sunrise has been around for ever and is consistently good.

I have seen a number of experienced restaurateurs open new branches in Chiang Mai and it always takes around a month to sort out all the problems and the food is very hit and miss. I will not go to a newly opened place for at least a few weeks for this reason.

I totally agree! People who go in so soon to any new place in Thailand (famous for staff issues) should be aware it is going to be a bigger risk of opening time problems. On the other hand I understand the impulse to try out their food fast. I don't doubt this new place is here to stay and that in the long run, most local people appreciating Mexican food are going to be quite happy to have this option.

Maybe owners should knock down prices 25-50% during this period as customers are basically acting as unpaid testers and tasters!

  7. THeir order was brought out wrong three times. THe third time they were brought 6 meals!!! They had ordered the combo (one each of three items) but instead were brought three full meals of each, times two!!!

Gil better get on THAT...lots of his money going town the toilet on mistakes like this!

THe enchilada was totally cold inside.

THe food was soggy and bland.

Looks like those prep-cooks were moved up to the chef line too quickly!

When you have Mikes Mexican Grill not far away the management might want to take notice or they will find themselves empty when the tourists go.

Counting on clueless Ruskies and those "trendy Thais" I guess.

  8. No, I had read on this site from some posters that the food was good, so I went there full of delight.

    Oh well, maybe next time.

I guess the less than gushing reviews many had posted have been removed (censored). You must remember, Sunrise has bought themselves protection from negative reviews by becoming a T-V sponsor so you will not get a complete picture of them from this forum.

  9. I had Christmas dinner there last year and when I tried to eat the potato dish it was still frozen! Never went back.

A frozen potato dish in Cherrys? I think you must be confusing it with another place.

sorry to contradict Phil but at Xmas they serve potato croquettes with Xmas dinner

    yes i know.........

Ewww! Anyway, I'm sure if he'd told the waiter they'd have taken it back and sorted it out. I've always had the best possible service there.

So true, as a regular, on the set menus, if the appetizer or soup course is something I don't like, they will happily make a substitution for me.

  10. I eagerly awaited the opening.

I did not tell my girlfriend where we were going to eat.

We arrived, and she was OK with it.

That was the best moment of the night.

I may be off by a few baht, but the total is accurate.

Chips- 49 baht and would never eat them again. NEVER!

Salsa - Great, and wide variety of different styles.

Lemon shake - 79 baht I do not believe it was over eight ounces, although the menu says 12 oz. glass - too much syrup, too.

Tamarind Drink - 69 baht My gf said only average

Steak fajitas - 295 baht Not very large for the price, and the flavor was very mild, not tasty at all.

Chicken Burrito 230 baht -- A lot of rice and beans in it, but enough chicken. Wish it would have tasted better, too.

Diet coke - 30 baht if I remember correctly

    Subtotal: 752 baht

    Tax and service = 7% and 10%

    Total = 885

I paid 1,000 and told the cashier to keep the rest.

    The staff was fine.

I really never complain about much, and am not opinionated either. If the restaurant had been less expensive and the food was average, that would have been OK, not good, but OK. Also, I had been eagerly awaiting the opening, as many other posters had mentioned that the restaurants in Bkk were very good. But, as the food prices were above average, and the flavor was below, especially the chips, I felt compelled to write about my experience yesterday evening.

The owner? - manager?, a Westerner walked by our table as we were almost finished, and stopped for a moment, waiting for me to look up, but I kept talking to my gf instead, although she did acknowledge him. I did not want to tell him what I thought. He then talked to the customers at the next table.

This is only one person's experience there, and opinions are like taste buds, but I will not be back.

The other Mexican restaurants in Pat - Jomtien are far better.

Others told you the food was only average to poor at the BKK outlets so you were warned. Your experience sounds like par for the course of my previous experiences so I will likely keep money for the other food options around town.

  11. On Nern Plub Wan, about 1 km up from Sukhumvit (just before the ESSO gas station on the right) on both sides of the street are shops that wholesale all sorts of food packaging containers and supplies. Many food carts/vendors stop to get their bags, straws, foam containers and stuff from them. They will have what you need and probably would deliver a standing order if you wish.

  12. They obviously could not get the city electric company to hook them up to the mains, so they are running a large generator next to the "Spirit House"

Have a good demo area for 3D TV screens if you want to see how they look

I saw that...<deleted>...must be for backup.

  13. I had Christmas dinner there last year and when I tried to eat the potato dish it was still frozen! Never went back.

Leaves an empty table for others...that's a plus as it's very often full (and reservations are usually needed for the buffet nites). ;)

  14. The BP today just reported the new Ranger 4x4 3.2l will be 1.1 million baht.

Yep, I read the review too. Here is the link

    http://www.bangkokpo...pickup-overlord

1.1 million baht for the 4 x 4 Wildtrak is an absolute bargain. In Australia it is going to be somewhere in the region of the equivalent of 1.8 million baht!

And on a relative annual income basis...Thais somewhere around US$ 6000 and Ozzies around US$ 50k (I'm guessing)...so compared to how long one would have to work to buy the vehicle, it's around 1 year in Oz and 5 years in LOS :o

  15. :realangry:

Closed before 11pm tonight , so I missed it again, either your ready to open as advertised or not. I realize that they have only just opened, but they need to get it right first off, went to Shenanigans and had a great steak for B260 no ++

:o The hours to me are not important. The plus plus prevents me eaating at the resturant. When loaf pizza went to plus I now go to New york pizza.:realangry:

Where's your next stop when NY Pizza goes ++?
