Listen to the presently sitting Prime Minister (or all others before him); no problem, no reason to panic and do not complain as it might damage the ever-so-important tourism industry.

What all these goons have not realized is that nobody in his right mind would a) return for a repeated visit nor b) recommend the places to their friends. It is a fact that you normally have a think-alike circle of acquaintances and friends. So, with one poor impression you spoil another ten, twenty or even more potential visitors.

But try to explain that to these self-centered clowns. I - for one - remember the North of Thailand 40+ years ago and there was never anything like smog or haze; apart from the winter morning fogs which were - health wise - harmless.

    Welcome to Thailand then ............

It wasn't like it 20 years ago either.

It really started to deteriorate from about 2010, before then residents did not give it much thought.

It's so bad bow , I left the home that I had intended to stay in forever to move south, and judging by what my friends say about this year's weather in CM I am very glad I did.

But I was really driven out by the burning and how it affected my chest

    A few things:

Us SSc is tax exempt by treaty, it says so in the document

Savings earned before 31 December 23 are tax exempt also, the document says that.

A mic of pension and savings in the same account represent commingled accounts, there's  a section in the document on

I am separating pension from rental income so I will just remit pension payments ,which is approx half of the 40k but I do have the exact figures, so my funds should not be comingled as I have kept very good accounts of my income.

    Is this acceptable?

I have updated the document to include various things, including:

    - greater clarity of some points

    - sample completed tax return link

    - map of TRD regions/districts

    - described the tax return filing process more fully

    - clarified that TRD fines for not filing a return when no tax is due are not always levied

    - linked the TRD e-filing site where lists of agents can be founds

    - described the TIN process more fully.

I continue to have ad-hoc problems with some links, all of which work fine in the master copy of the guide on my desktop but sometimes fail when the document is uploaded. Even after checking the links, once the document is uploaded, they work fine for me but not so for others!  This is WIP.

    Hi Mike, a quick question.

If my offshore banking statement shows that there was 40,000 pounds in my account before 1st January this year then that money can be brought to Thailand tax exempt.

    Is this correct?

  4. Hi Mike

Personally I think u are doing a fantastic job ....but some (like me) find it difficult to understand  and it wouldn't matter who was in your place, it's still a lot of hard work for you.

Can you just clarify 2 things for me please?

If I don't bring any capital into LOS in 2024 I will have no need to file?

Secondly ,does this still apply to rental income?

My rental income is approx the same as my pension income and one of the tax companies said that I would be liable for around 100,000 baht a year in tax.

How do I separate this out as it appears that I would have to file a report every 6 months for that money and annually  for the remainder.?

It's all very confusing for most of us, but I will use my savings I was saving for medical care to last a year and purchase Thai Insurance to cover it, and of course receive an allowance for this when I do file.

Thanks for doing a splendid job Mike and I apologize if any of these questions were previously asked

  6. Only 2% of Thais pay tax......there must be many that owe it but just don't pay it

    An example:

15 years ago my wife owned a restaurant in CM.

She had a visit from the taxman.

He asked her how much she was making and she said times were tough and she was not making hardly anything after she had paid her staff.

The taxman was very sympathetic, did not ask to see the books and they settled on a figure  of 500 baht for the year.

As it goes she was hardly making any money and what she said was truthful , but she could easily have been fibbing.

How many don't tell the truth about thier tax affairs?

So now they want to target westerners pensions as we are easy targets

As a type 2 sufferer I fail to understand why it is not possible to purchase a Continuous Glucose Monitor in Thailand, unlike many Western countries. These easy to use devices give out realtime information on glucose levels without the finger prick. This greatly enhanced our ability to understand the impact that foods have and modify our eating to minimise sugar spikes. Why does this country prevent us living a more carefully managed life? I suspect there is pressure from the likes of hospitals that want to control their use and make big bucks.

I prick my finger every morning, it's not an issue for me......we do not live in the west.

At least you can easily purchase diebetis monitoring equipment...that was not the case 20 years ago so there has been progress

Now the BIG question did they work and did you get your money's worth....

    regards Worgeordie

They were knock offs at that price.

An original pack of four costs at least 2,000 baht.

They can work but you should check that your BP is normal before taking them, fake or otherwise, low blood pressure and any form of sexual enhancement drugs can give you a heart attack. ❤️  Be careful

There are only two airports in Thailand that can accommodate AUTO-Landings. BKK and DMK both have Cat II approaches.

Chiang Mai (CNX) has Category 1 approach ILS which is NOT autoland. The minimums are 233ft where you must SEE the runway required criteria, then you disconnect the auto pilot and land manually.

In other words, heavy rain or smog can prevent a landing and go around.

    Cheers!

In previous years when pollution is very very bad planes have been diverted to other airports.

I have not seen any reports of that happening this year

It will be fine in about a month until next February.

The South is about double the cost up north for restaurant food.

My gym in Chiang Rai charges 50B for day pass, just paid 350B and while the gym area had superb equipment, it wasn't really air conditioned adequately.

So, you don't necessarily get more just because it's more expensive.

OK, the beach is technically free in the South, but then you're tempted to eat there and pay OMG prices.

Anantara, a 5 star resort on Samui wants 1000B for a Phuket lobster roll.

C'mon.  Is it really that good? 😊

Not in Hua Hin.....property is the same price for buying or rental

    Food is a similar price

    Beers the same

I am spending no more now than when I lived in Chiang Mai

I can't speak for the islands but islands are always more expensive but you can travel all the way down south to Surat Thani and it's cheap...but HH is as far as I wanted to go as it has everything a westerner needs and is only 3 hours from Bangkok

Been through 11 years of this, and not one step forward to deter or effectively combat these clowns causing so many problems.
Leads me to surmise that either there is financial incentive not to stop anyone or the government is just too damn inept to deal with it.
Either way, TAT is going to see it’s precious tourism revenue suffer, as the burning seasons extends itself longer and longer…

Probably not be until the end of May that the skies will clear, so four months this year..?
The missus and I have had enough, we’re off down south, I don’t want to but it’s ridiculous to think that this is just continue on unabated and considered a normal part of living in Chiang Mai.

Regrettably I left my "forever home" in CM last  September after 20 years because of the terrible burning season last year.

    I relocated to Hua Hin.

Obviously looking at the pollution this year it seems I made the correct decision.

I miss my mates as does my wife though.

We already came back to visit in January and will go again in August.

I hope that one day the government gets a handle on this as there could well be many more people like me that are not prepared to put up with it, turning CM into a ghost town.

If you don't need to be there, then don't be there and potentially harm yourself, especially if you are a pensioner like me with health issues.

It was stressful, but doable to sellup- buy and move.
