  1. @ Smedly -

When I saw the bike in the shop I didn't care about the green book. I have had 2 bikes in the past with green books but had never needed to show them to police, so thought that maybe it makes no difference apart from when coming to sell it again.

Apologies if my replies are one sided, but obviously I want to justify not paying 70k for a green book. I appreciate everybody's constructive advice.

  2. Really don't understand why the OP hasn't bothered to obtain a Thai driving license. No insurance, then if an accident occurs you will have to negotiate with the police for victim compensation. If you have the appropriate insurance the company rep does this on your behalf.

You mentioned paying 200k baht for bail bond is no issue for you. Until you pay the cash you will be held in police cells, not a pleasant experience. Bail bond will require the police informing immigration, who in turn put a stop on your passport until legal proceeding/payments is completed. Immigration also inform your Embassy so you cannot claim to have lost your passport and obtain a replacement. Also if you don't have a driving license any tea money costs will increase. No matter how good a driver you are, shit does happen through no fault of your own - at a minimum get a license so you're legal

Yes, I understand the risks..I have 2 passports and ways and means. But my original OP was asking if it was worth obtaining a green book, and surprisingly nobody has mentioned that it will be more difficult to sell. That point seems blatantly obvious now tho lol

  3. SINGLE FRONT BRAKE DISC???!!!! hit-the-fan.gif

Assuming I am right, than weight should be less than an ER-6 which gets by quite well with a single front disk.

Um Dave, if you think an ER6 only has one disc up front then you need to have your eyes examined bro...

    Picture-017_resizeSSR.jpg

The OP is talking about the CBR 500 not the ER6n, and you can see quite clearly it only has one brake disc...Are YOUR eyes OK?? ?

  4. Wow so much hostility....

    @soi41 - 'insurance' has only 1 'r'.....brainchild.

@jbrain - I must have been very lucky up to now, I never see the highway police except on the 36 but I'm not on that road often. I don't carry that much money in my pocket if that's what you mean..but sometimes pleading ignorant with a sweetner can get us off the hook IMHO.

@madjbs - I do like it and I will keep it regardless..whether or not I attempt to get it registered is another story.

  5. Tony, you asked 'Would you ride an unplated / unregistered vehicle in your home country?' and 'What makes you think you can get away with it here?'

Would you ride as fast as you do in your home country as you do here? What makes you think you can get away with it here?

The answer is the same, this is Thailand and not America, England, Australia etc etc

Max fine for speeding in Thailand is 800 Baht but usually you can grease your way through for less. Back home you go to jail for 20 over in some states.

Anyway, speeding and driving an unregistered vehicle illegally on public streets are two totally different offenses.

You live in Chiang Rai where no body cares about plates, but the OP says he bought the bike in Bangkok, which leads me to guess that maybe he's riding it in Bangkok.

You don't see many unplated bikes in Bangkok, and the ones you do see are invariably being ridden by cops or folks with the right BiB connections.

If he is in BKK or Pattaya then, from what I have heard, it would be advisable to get a green book.

I am in Rayong, and very seldom drive near Pattaya. Too many idiots.

800 baht? I assume that is for bikes only? I got an official ticket (I was never stopped but a police photo was posted to my HR manager) for 1000 baht for speeding on the elevated highway near Bang Na...

Back to the original post, you need a book but it's too late now. If you pay 70k i suspect (actually I am sure) it will be money down the drain and 18 months of headaches with no result. Hope you dont have a serious accident on it.

Yeah as I said it is only taken out on runs now and again. I work abroad and it only comes out about once a month. I used to rent bikes in Pattaya all the time living under the 'you crash you pay' scheme. Any time I am stopped by the police I always show respect to them and always smile and joke which has worked up to now so with Buddha's help nobody will take my bike away from me!

  7. And here we go again....

    @therealmrbrightside

I hope, you are not so ignorant, like some other people.

Have you ever seriously thought about the consequences, when you are involved in bad accident, guilty or not?

YOU are the Farang with the illegal, unregistered bike!

Do really believe, your dubious (3 months?) insurance will cover this with a bail bond?

You will go straight to jail, if you don't have the 200.000 in your pocket....

    Is it really worth it?

I see your points, but this is driving a bike not too much, around back roads of Rayong and Chonburi..I am not driving flat out through Pattaya beach road drunk at 3am in the morning. So no, I haven't thought of the consequences of an accident like that. I have been in Thailand long enough to know that the farang always pays regardless of if he has a green book or not. If I had to pay up 200,000 thb to stop me going to jail. I would obviously pay it simple as that. As long as the 3 month dubious piece of paper stops the bib from liberating my bike, then I will take my chances - if it is really a possibility that my bike will be impounded indefinitely then I will fork out for the book.

  8. Here we go again, an OP who asks a question but know already there is only 1 answer,.........the one he has in his head.

Why do these people even bother to write a thread and ask questions if they not gonna accept the answers anyway.

@Skybluestu,you are right there is abig difference between your homecountry and Thailand, same as there is a big difference between getting a speeding ticket and getting stopped riding an illegally imported bike.

I can accept ANSWERS but not a lecture on what is right and wrong!!!

The shop told me as I said about the documents I have. All I was asking was what everybody thought about this, and of course your experiences.

    Chill out man.

  9. OK....The invoice papers are from the motorcycle shop in BKK..I was not 'cheated' as some people say because I knew I was not getting a green book and no I wouldn't ride an unregistered bike in my own country...In fact I don't have a bike licence so I wouldn't even ride a bike back home. But the fact of the matter is that this is not my home country - this is in fact, Thailand. What I have been informed by the shop is that the insurance payment will cover me for not being registered as long as I keep the receipt valid (every 3 months) I was stopped in Pattaya by around 5 Policemen and ushered into a police box where I paid a fine for no bike licence...and that was it. I explained to them that I bought the bike from a shop in BKK and this is the documents they gave me, and they were happy and smiled at the 300thb fine I paid for no licence.

  10. Dear all,

I recently bought a 2000 Yamaha R1 from a big bike shop in BKK.

It did not come with the Green Book, but instead the invoice papers and a small insurance receipt which I am supposed to pay every 3 months 600 thb to keep valid.

I have been stopped by the police once and they had no problems with the documents I provided to them and was not fined or questioned.

The shop told me that they can arrange the Green Book transfer for the sum of around 70,000thb but I don't know if it is worth paying it, unless of course I want to sell the bike I may not get as much money for it.

    Any advice or information?

  11. www.thaiprivateeye.com - Warren Olson specializes in finding people.

If he can find a missing Mormon, he can find anybody....

And while he is at it maybe he can find a lot of posters sense of humor. But this topic is not a laughing matter.

Not intended to be funny by any means. I have used this company before, they are very professional and very efficient.

  12. What should I expect to pay for mid level accommodations around the north? Nothing deluxe but not backpacker level either.

What does it usually cost to fly from Hanoi to HCMC? What are the more reliable airlines?

Again, thanks for all the helpful info.

This hotel is beautiful...and it is around 50USD per night, there are heaps of hotels around the area though so I'm sure you can shop around. This hotel also has a boat which you can go on a cruise around Halong Bay.

    NB

Flights were not cheap, we paid well over $100 for our flights from HCMC to Haipong (Catbi) with Jetstar airways which are now holders of my 'worst flight' trophy..be warned.

  13. I'm just back from Vietnam. We spent 2 days in HCMC, went on a tour on the front of a bike and saw all the sights; American war history museum, Art museums, Saigon River etc but in all honesty there wasn't much left to see after that..We then flew from HCMC to Haiphong and traveled to see Halong Bay. The hotel we stayed in was the Halong Plaza hotel and was beautiful. We also did a day cruise around Halong Bay and spent the night in among the islands. Absolutely stunning place, we spent 10 days altogether and it was just fine, although I didn't visit Da Nang which is halfway up the coast and is supposed to be beautiful.

The main thing I noticed between South and North was the attitude of the locals. in HCMC you will be ripped off and conned at the drop of a hat, but up north the locals are a bit more pleasant.

You can catch a train from South to North, but not advisable if you like any comfort when travelling.

  14. I heard that the reason why they check for stage 3 Syphilis was because this was another way of diagnosing HIV in it's early stages??. I also did the WP medical and got checked for Elephantitis, Leprosy etc etc, but as this is Thailand a quick 500thb under the table and the doc gave me the certificate..Now I am happily teaching at a school in Rayong - I'm the teacher with no fingers or toes and a pair of gigantic <deleted>.

  15. Right folks, there is a guy who is the most popular advertisement commentator in Pattaya..he's on the radio, the tv channel and probably so much more.

Anybody who can hear tonal change, will know this guy..because his adverts are the funniest things I hear.. "Come to ******* it's all the way up and its all the way down again but here's the number all the way up and all the way down again. They serve the best all the way up chips and all the way down again fish, but that's not all..the way up and all the way down again.

Sorry maybe I am bored and struggling for a topic, but I always laugh when I hear the guy and practice even more on my radio voice. cheesy.gif

  16. My Thai GF is 27 years old and I bought her her first ipad about 4 months ago, and now there is little/no conversation between us..just her on facebook and playing games 24 hours 7 days a week...if that is how a first tablet affects a developed mind, how the hell is it going to benefit P1 kids in a constructive way?? Sounds like more lazyness or small minded ideas on how to keep up with the western world... problem is most of us in the west have at least flunked out of school before we get such luxuries...
