    exactly: you do not need to compare apples and oranges. I did like OP: original entry plus covid extensions made me first stay 16 months, then one more entry with extensions. after that I flew to Saigon for a very short stay and returned to Bangkok one week ago, with an 'onward flight' booked through the website with the same name. got visa exempt 45 days with no discussion.

    Not really. I did exactly this last week, return from Saigon and visa exempt, without a hitch.

    there is no legal requirement on how long to stay in vietnam. bangkok-saigon is a convenient route.

    I can understand the feeling of wanting to walk away from a relationship and a child but the reasons you give ("Her English wasn't great and a night would often consist of her watching Thai television while I read a book or browsed the internet.     Many wealthy ethnic Indians here who have Thai citizenship and names and businesses. To have dual US/Thai citizenship us also no rarity for them, kind of an escape route in dire times.
