The rules are indeed different. You need an import licence for booze or baccy, no licence, no import.

You don't need a licence for a handbag (despite my wife's being classed as a lethal weapon), so you can pay the duty. You evidently got caught up in the purge a little while back when everything that looked remotely dutyable and valued over about 10k was stopped and charged.

We were ignorant on the rules and brought it in a giant gucci bag with the recipt still in it. It was clear as day and with hind sight very dumb. It was well over 100k Baht so we paid the crazy tax and went on. Now I ask about the rules first and glad I did. I would have walked in with 500g or so of cigars but yeah, not worth the risk at all.

Sadly I live in the north and shipping them here has failed in the past.

    Thanks again

I have been "caught" in the green line with a designer bag for my wife bought in Singapore and they made my pay import taxes on it. The tax was over 30,000 Baht but they let me keep the bag. I honestly had no idea I had to pay a tax on a hand bag at the time.

Can I not just pay taxes like this on the cigars? This would be trying to pay in the red line? I'm not sure what the "official mechanism" means.

  3. I'm interested in getting catastrophic health insurance for use in Thailand for my family. I'm looking for coverage start at over 10 million baht or something like this. We can cover most things but if we get a crazy cancer or we all get messed up in a car accedent I'd like to have some help.

Is there such a thing in Thailand? I have looked for years with little success.

    Thank you.

You do not mention what grade your son is in.  My question though is how long have you lived here and how can your son got to school and not have to learn Thai.

matayom onet is very important for universities

I assume that you have no intention of iving in Thailand long

I have lived here 15 years and the school that he goes to teaches him Thai 3 hours a week. It used to be 2. We will go back to the US as we pay over a million a year per kid for school and we are soon to have 3 kids in school. Honestly i think the public school in the US is going to be about as good.

He is in p6. At least half of the kids at his school come from Europe or Asia (with out parents) and they do not need to learn Thai.

Edit: He can speak Thai well enough but not read well at all.

  5. @Number 6   He will be going into M1 next year so it is not even M3 or M6. I guess that would make him P6.

He might not get into Stanford but we will move back to Palo Alto in a year and a half so he can do his HS there in the USA. We have not focused on Thai because of things like the SAT. I'm sure he will find a school in Cali that will work for him.

I'm thinking this test is worthless, at least for him, but some people do seems to think it is the end of the world, like with out it no job in Thailand.

The school he is moving into is one of the best in Thailand and they don't seem to care at all.

The school he is at now seems to think the world will end if he does not take it so I just wanted to sort out why, however I might not ever know.

Thailand can be an amazing place at times.

  6. I wonder what would be better, a missed test or a score that is so low because the person taking the test can't read Thai.

"Foreign educational qualifications below a degree from an accredited foreign university are not recognized by the Thai Ministry of education."

I'm not really sure how this is an issue for us. He will be going to a school in Thailand, a school that does not recognize the O net test.

I'm also not sure how missing this test will mean he can never work in Thailand. He will odds are be going to Standford in the USA where I went to school.

His university degree is not going to be valid when he has a missing O net test for work in Thailand despite him being Thai?

I doubt he will want to work in Thailand but I don't really see why this is so important, I must be missing something. Google searching is not helping and the international school also seems to think it is meaningless so Im really at a loss here. Can you give me a bit more information or some sources?

    Thanks

  7. How is missing a government test going to hurt my childs education when he is not in government school? The test is in Thai and he cant read Thai.

I'm not even sure why he is taking this test and I'm not sure if I will get the results. I am just asking question so I know what is going on.

So yeah, Im trying to sort out what is going on before we take the holiday.

  8. How important is the O net test and why does it matter?

Grandparents are visiting and we have a long planned trip to Singapore however the school just told us yesterday we have to cancel the trip because he needs to take the O net test. They gave us about a weeks notice and we gave them 3 for the trip. They are saying they can't change the date and we must take the child to a different school for the test.

What happens to my child if they miss the test?

What happens to the school if they miss the test?

They are in international school and have been accepted to a different school for next year.

Is this really a big deal for my child or is it just a big deal for the school?

    Thanks.

  9. How can one get the 10 year from their own country if they need

    – Applicant must have a bank deposit of no less than 3 million bahts in Thailand or a bank deposit of no less than 1.8 million bahts and annual income of no less than 1.2 million bahts. Such amount must be maintained in bank deposit in full for at least one year, and keep at no less than 1.5 million bahts thereafter.

    – Applicant must have a Thai health insurance for the duration of stay, with coverage for outpatient treatment of no less than 40,000 bahts and inpatient treatment of no less than 400,000 bahts.

Can people get these 10 year visas now?

  10. I'm wondering if my wife will need a mexican visa as she has a 10 year US tourist visa.

I found this on the Mexican Visa website. https://embamex.sre.gob.mx/tailandia/index.php/2016-04-08-07-30-52/2016-04-08-07-31-38

Please note that holders of a valid USA visa can be authorized at any port of entry by the migratory authorities to visit Mexico as tourist, business visitor or person in transit without holding a Mexican visa, regardless of their nationality. To enter the country visitors must meet the following requirements:

A valid passport at the time of the intended date of entry to Mexico.

    Valid USA Visa.

Immigration authorities may request additional information such as: main destination, hotel accommodation, return ticket, proof of financial means (international credit cards, debit cards or traveller's cheques).

Has anyone had experiance with this? I will travel to Mexico with my wife.

    Thank you.

Is this applying also to crypto? As I'm not english fluent, not sure I understand everyhing what you guys wrote here. According to your posts:

    example A

Cryptocurrencie's sold in september 2018 on crypto exchange from singapore or hong kong > I leave funds in dollars on this exchange until january 2019 and then make withdrawal to my thai bank account

    - no tax in thailand?

    example B

Cryptocurrencie's sold in december 2018 on localbitcoins for cash in singapore > than I deposit this money into my thai bank account in january 2019

    - no tax in thailand?

I wanna be ok with AML rules - I wanna use this money for buy stocks later - so when banks will ask me for source of my funds I can tell them I just sold cryptocurrencies and I have everything done in accordance with the regulations

as far as I understand it, this is correct. I am not a lawyer.
