Anutin orders faster deportations of foreign offenders

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has instructed governors across Thailand to act quickly against foreign nationals who break the law, exploit Thais or engage in what he described as undesirable behaviour.

Speaking at the Interior Ministry at about 8.30am on 17 September, Anutin said foreigners who earn an honest living, respect Thai law and do not take advantage of local people remain welcome. He specifically mentioned Phuket and Surat Thani, but said similar action was needed nationwide.

Deportation action without delays

For foreigners living in, investing in or visiting Thailand, the immediate message is not a change to legal immigration status or visa rules, but a tougher enforcement approach where authorities believe there is evidence of wrongdoing.

Anutin told governors and district chiefs to stop handling cases one at a time and use their full legal powers. He said he had signed an Interior Ministry deportation announcement and that officials should act immediately when a case met the criteria.

He told provincial authorities not to delay an expulsion because of uncertainty over the cost of an air ticket. Provinces could pay first and later arrange reimbursement, he said.

"If their conduct is undesirable, there is only one option: leave. That is all," Anutin said, adding that appeals would not be a problem.

He said keeping offending foreigners in Thailand for legal proceedings could leave the authorities responsible for food, water and accommodation, whereas deportation would remove them from the country.

Focus on land, nominees and illegal work

Anutin ordered closer monitoring of offences involving foreign nationals, including the use of Thai nominees, landholding, fraudulent business activity, working without permits and using Thailand as a base for crime.

He said the cases did not concern one nationality alone, referring to foreign nationals from Asia, the Middle East, Central Asia, Europe and Africa.

The prime minister also told governors to investigate premises displaying signs barring Thai people from entering. Thai people should generally be able to enter establishments across the country, he said, with private residences the exception.

Even then, he said a private homeowner should not display a sign saying Thai people were not welcome. Anyone prepared to erect such a sign should face closer scrutiny for other possible offences, he added.

Religious sites and cemetery request

Anutin also raised concerns about foreign nationals establishing religious sites without approval, saying such places must respect Thai society and culture.

Referring to a recent request to establish a private cemetery, he said: "If they are going to die, they should go die back home, not here."

He also said a business licensed as a restaurant could not operate a religious site inside the premises. Thailand remained willing to welcome tourists and investors where the relationship benefited both sides, he said, but spending money in the country did not give anyone the right to exploit others or carry out illegal activities.

You have to take it in context. Anutin's context was that of foreigners establishing foreigner-only religious centers and foreigner-only cemeteries, here in Thailand, where native Thais are excluded. Or for that matter, establishing any institution here in Thailand that rejects or excludes native Thais.
His point was that foreigners are in Thailand. If they want special religious centers and special cemeteries located in Thailand that are exclusively for special foreigners, then "they should go die back home."

As someone who is Theravada Buddhist and plans to have a simple Thai Buddhist send-away, I've got to agree.

For the annual visa renewal, you are now required to submit a hospital statement certifying that you will not die in the coming year.

Perhaps Anutin will actually do something beneficial for Thailand, for once in his sorry life. He could create a new specialty, psychic doctors.

So we are no longer allowed to die here then?

I guess the "private cemetaries" pis-ed them off and has ruined it for all of us now.

They won't even let us die here.

Ouch! Anutin wins the annual award for political incorrectness. I think what he means is get cremated or send the body back home for burial. This makes sense when taken in context that foreigners can not own land.

Yes, I guess "special private cemetary" is perceived as segregation and elitist.

Maybe it has to do with their religious beliefs that they don't want to be buried next to any non-orthodox believer in Talmud, but it didn't go over well with the Thais.

It's good that Anutin made this formal announcement so now it's abundantly clear what the protests were about and the type of behavior they don't tolerate.

Agree 100%. Creating foreigner-only religious centers and foreigner-only cemeteries is completely unacceptable. Foreigner displaying signs barring Thais from establishments should be deported immediately. There is no room for these "I'm better than you" foreigners.

Bit like foreign Muslims building Mosques wherever they feel like it?

Agree in principle that foreign nationals should not be allowed to build "I'm better than you" religious centers.

I interpet the 'not die here, die in home country' comment, more to, if die here, TH, have money or insurance to pay for you hospital bill. Stop stiffing hospitals for your care, or after your demise.

Would think as many things, taken out of context, or lost in translation. I kind of like the PM, as enforcing the law and cleaning house is always a good thing.

Whether by his foreigner bias, or just wanting people to follow the rule of laws, which certainly isn't asking too much of any 'guest'.

You come to my house, it's my rules, or, don't let the door hit you on the way out. Every country should be the same.

Most want guest, immigrants to follow the laws in their home country, why is Thailand bad for enforcing theirs.

It just reinforces my opinion that Anutin basically does not like farangs - he likes their money, but once they are of no financial benefit to the country - f**k off!

No, that's not true.

Because the Chabad folks were bringing in a lot of money.

It's the opposite. Money will only get you so far.

It's not because you invest a lot of money that you can do whatever you want.

Anutin’s line about foreigners needing to “go die back home” is completely detached from the demographic reality.

Thailand has tens of thousands of long‑term retirees, and every province is full of older expats who’ve bought homes, married locally, and contributed to the community for decades.

If the goal was to reassure people, then telling residents they’re welcome to spend, invest, and retire here — but not to die here — probably isn’t the winning message he thinks it is!

Personally I don't like the guy, but are you reading it correctly.

When it says " go back home and die " prior to that statement he is referring to a case where a particularly religion wants to have a cememtsry site for just a particular religion for example like " Jewish only " this isn't meant to say in general if you are a foreign go home to die.

Funny, although it is Thailand I reference this article everything being said is like Make Thailand Great again!

His wish is the same as Trumps and every country in this earth?

I've been here 20 years as a foreigner I don't have a problem with anything being said!

I see from your number of posts that presumably you live here, so I am surprised that you do not seem to realise that in the majority of cases, if you invest a lot of money you CAN do whatever you want. (And by "investing" that covers brown paper bags as well!)

Have you been handing out bags of money to whatever you want, or are you able to do the things you want without handing out bags of money?

One of the things that spoiled his rhetoric was his tasteless comment about not dying here - merely confirmed that he hates farangs anyway.

I have no doubt that Anutin, much like the majority of Thais, is highly nationalistic. And I'd agree with you, remembering his "Ai Farang" (translated to essentially "Ai" (expletive) "Farang" (foreigners of European descent)) back when tourist refused to accept and don masks when he was handing them out in Bangkok back during the Covid scare. Anutin is no fan of foreigners.

However..............

Some AN members are twisting themselves like contortionists to make this quote:
"Referring to a recent request to establish a private cemetery, he said: 'If they are going to die, they should go die back home, not here.'"
Sound like it means:
"All foreigners should go home to die."
When he actually meant that:
"If you need your own private cemetery in which only those of a certain foreign ethnicity and/or foreign religious affiliation can be interned, then (explicit) either go home to die or (implied) ship your body back to your home country."

And that makes sense. Foreigners can't own land, so a cemetery for foreigners only is either foreigner own or Thai nominee owned - both situations are against Thai law. And as a nationalist, he is going to balk at any situation where businesses or institutions established in Thailand, overtly exclude native Thais from entering their businesses or taking part in their institution.
