Hong Kong man held with 350kg of ice in Bangkok

Thai police have arrested a 26-year-old Hong Kong man after seizing about 350kg of crystal methamphetamine, known locally as ice, from a house in Bangkok's Min Buri district.

Police said the drugs had allegedly been stored ready for repackaging, concealment and onward shipment overseas. The reported export value was put at around 700 million baht.

Drugs found in three plastic barrels

The Crime Suppression Division and narcotics police searched house number 199/335 in Soi Rom Klao 11, Saen Saep subdistrict, Min Buri, on September 22.

The operation was led by Pol Maj Gen Phatthanasak Bubphasuwan, commander of the Crime Suppression Division, and Pol Col Netiwit Thanasitnithikun, superintendent of Sub-division 2.

Investigators said they had received information about a Hong Kong drug-trafficking network allegedly bringing narcotics into Thailand for storage before sending them to other countries.

Inside the property, officers found the Hong Kong national, identified only as Wang, who was reportedly living alone. The ice was stored in three plastic barrels and was allegedly ready to be divided into smaller packages and hidden for export.

Police also seized equipment they said was intended for preparing the drugs, including plastic bags, cardboard boxes, digital scales, a blender, a vacuum-sealing machine, suitcases, plastic basins and plastic crates.

Suspect says he entered on a tourist visa

During questioning, Wang told police that this was his first visit to Thailand. He said he arrived on September 14 on a tourist visa, travelling from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

According to police, Wang said people linked to the operation in Thailand had arranged the house and delivered the drugs. He allegedly said he had been hired to package the methamphetamine while awaiting instructions for its onward delivery.

He told officers he was promised 20,000 Hong Kong dollars for the work, police said.

Wang and the seized items were handed to narcotics police for legal action. Officers are continuing their investigation to identify and locate other alleged members of the network, including those said to have ordered the operation.
