Thailand expat urges Aussies to consider a cheaper life

Australian expat Jay Houston says he has cut his rent to a quarter of what he paid in Australia after moving to Thailand, and is now running an online business to help other Australians make the move.

Houston, 50, told 7News he can live what he describes as a luxury lifestyle for $1,800 a month, as rising living costs and pressure on household budgets prompt more Australians to consider working or living overseas.

The Thailand costs he cites

Speaking while sitting beside a pool at his condominium, Houston said: "This is my office, I'm in no hurry to leave it."

He said he lives in a "beautiful high-security condominium" with two pools, paying $630 a month in rent. His power bill is $60, water costs $4 and Wi-Fi costs $2, he said.

"I finish (work) by 2pm and then hit the beaches... I've got the best half of my life ahead of me," he told the broadcaster.

Houston also said his retirement visa with multiple exit permit, allows him to fly in and out of Thailand as often as he likes.

Business built around moving abroad

Houston has launched an online business offering guidance to Australians on insurance, visas and finding housing in Thailand.

He said the venture grew from his own difficult experience after first moving overseas. Houston selected the wrong medical insurance policy, an error he said was costly and almost killed him.

Thailand remains a popular base for foreign retirees, remote workers and long-term visitors, although the costs and paperwork involved can vary considerably according to location, accommodation choices and an individual's visa and healthcare needs.

Australian households under pressure

Recent Australian data has pointed to more people looking overseas for work and relief from the cost of living crisis.

The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures showed the number of Australians holding more than one job passed one million for the first time. Full-time employment fell by 6,000 in August, while part-time employment increased by 39,000.

KPMG chief economist Brendan Rynne said the figures suggested Australia's economy was weakening.

"Households are still feeling the pinch of higher inflation," he said. "Households are scrambling to find more income to help cover their rising day-to-day expenses and future increases in mortgage payments."

Haven’t you crossed paths with the award winning journalist in a different forum?

As I recall, you mentioned he was banned from a few (Australian).

No wonder your essay got published, because unlike journalist, you do not write about the facts. 😂

Now, receiving a monetary reward for an essay is still considered work.

The use of the words "meet" and "met" suggest an in person interaction. I have never met, nor had a meeting, with this member in person. However, I have replied to his posts in several threads, in different forums.

True.

You even need a work permit for volunteering in Thailand.

Have I just breached the conditions of my retirement visa? 😂

Ahhh, it goes back to the old argument, for example, "Can I paint my own house, or is that working here?" 😂

Much as I dislike defending GG2, he's right. That's why there are tobacco wars going on in Sydney and Melbourne, with an illicit tobacco trade rife in both cities.

You heard it here first. I receive no money for creating such Ideas. I am on a retirement visa. I am not working for AN. 😂

ROFL. Permit me to doubt you have ever had an idea people would pay money for.

Actually, my essays are very factual.

Here's an excerpt of a satire I wrote on the subject of customer service:

"Our operational efficiency begins with the systematic

neutralization of customer contact. Let’s be clear: if your call was truly important, you would be connected to a human forthwith.

Instead, we have engineered a multi-tiered purgatory

designed to induce customer despair:

We drain the customer’s mobile credit while a voice says:

“We apologize for the delay in answering your call” This statement borrows heavily from the Flanders and Swann song The Reluctant Cannibal, in which the father advises the son “ Always be sincere, whether you mean it or not”.

“An operator will be with you shortly” We use the term “shortly” in the same way geologists use the word “aeon”.

We then intersperse self-congratulatory messages about the products which are the subject of complaint, with hold music selected by a committee of office psychopaths, which sounds like a cross between cats fighting and hail on a tin roof.

And yet there are many Aus websites that advertise the cost per pack and they are not the prices georginaboi claims.

Ahhh, it goes back to the old argument, for example, "Can I paint my own house, or is that working here?" 😂

How many here can claim that the house they live in is actually "their own"? realistically, In practice, painting the interior is far less likely to be an issue than painting the exterior , The real question is if any have fallen foul of the authorities for painting the house they live in, was it simply for painting or were there other factors involved?

I mean like has anybody found them self "on the receiving end" simply as a result of being spotted in the act of painting by a vigilant immigration official who just happened to be passing ? or has a grudge bearing neighbor or wife informed on them.? I'm guessing that the immigration officers are in someway obliged to follow up an official complaint from a third party But I don't doubt that some of the keener ones might just act on what they have seen themselves

I have always painted the outside of the (wife's) house and indeed the wall surrounding it which I even built myself, all in full view of neighbours which include several police officers of varying ranks upto and including a captain

A lot of laws in Thailand are applied subjectively, there is little to be gained by falling out, with or upsetting , ones neighbours, or family, or anybody else for that matter,

You are probably looking at websites where the source of the tobacco is quite dodgy.

If it is priced at $15-$30 per pack of 20, or $10-$20 per pouch, it definitely is.

Current estimates of the illicit trade is 25% of all tobacco sales.

It's enormously profitable for criminals, which is why they are going to war over teritory.

He certainly doesn't look very well, could be the reason he failed to mention any details regarding insurance, ( to the chagrin of several members) but if he was declined insurance due to a pre existing condition he would have no details of insurance costs to pass on those availing himself of his services.

No mention of any "significant other"either which is a little unusual for those "gushing" about their life here

Vietnam has no retirement visa. If it did, IMO quite a few foreigners would be picking it over Thailand.

The essay is published under a nom-de-plume.

The money is paid into an Australian bank account. Australian dollars.

I wouldn't count that as "working in Thailand" anyway. What are you supposed to do? Lock yourself in a condo and live like a potted plant? People living here write articles in journals. Some for pay, some not. It do not believe it violates Thai labor law to publish a poem in a non-Thai journal.
