Thailand, Russia plan 2027 cultural celebrations

Thailand and Russia are preparing cultural events for 2027 to mark 130 years of diplomatic relations, following talks between their culture ministers in Moscow on September 22.

Thai Culture Minister Sabida Thaised met Russian Culture Minister Olga Lyubimova at Russia's Ministry of Culture to discuss anniversary plans and wider cooperation under an existing cultural memorandum of understanding.

Arts, museums and professional exchanges

The agreement covers exchanges of personnel, support for performing arts and music, museum cooperation and other cultural exchange activities.

Both sides discussed how these areas could be developed into practical programmes for the anniversary year. Thailand's Ministry of Culture said the talks focused on turning the existing agreement into concrete activities.

Thailand also proposed broader knowledge-sharing and professional exchanges in arts and culture. This could include special Russian exhibitions in Thailand, while the Thai delegation said it was ready to support cooperation in all the areas raised during the meeting.

The ministry said the exchanges would allow people in both countries to demonstrate their abilities, share knowledge and take part in international activities.

Tourism and potential benefits for visitors

Beyond the 2027 celebrations, Thailand's Culture Ministry said deeper cooperation could create jobs and career opportunities, as well as increase income for Thai entrepreneurs, artists, craftspeople and professionals in the creative and cultural sectors.

The ministry expects the cooperation to reinforce Thailand's position as a cultural tourism destination and bring more Russian visitors to the country. It said a rise in tourism could support economic growth and help spread income to local communities over the longer term.

Russia has long been an important source market for Thailand's tourism industry, particularly for beach destinations and major cities. The ministry's stated aim is for cultural links to complement that tourism relationship while promoting Thai creative work internationally.
