A Ukrainian man has asked Thai authorities for progress on a complaint over nose reconstruction surgery at a Bangkok hospital, saying he has suffered breathing problems since the operation.
The man, identified as Pavlo, approached Channel 7HD with a friend on September 23. He said he underwent surgery for a fractured nose at a hospital in Bangkok's Bang Kho Laem district on September 12 last year.
Pavlo said the operation involved taking bone from his rib to rebuild his nose, at a cost of 350,000 baht. He later reported difficulty breathing and a sensation that his airways were blocked.
Concerns after reconstruction surgery
According to Pavlo, he returned to the doctor who carried out the procedure after the symptoms developed. He said the doctor told him the problems were a normal side effect of the surgery.
A medical examination on February 2 this year found that Pavlo had suffered a fractured rib, adding to his concerns about the treatment outcome.
Pavlo said he had initially checked the doctor's background with a well-known university in the United States, which he believed the doctor had attended. Information he found described the doctor as among the three best doctors in the ASEAN region for this type of procedure, and he decided to proceed based on the stated qualifications and experience.
He said further checks later produced information indicating that the doctor had previously paid compensation to another foreign patient following an alleged treatment error.
Hospital and doctor hold valid registrations
Pavlo filed a complaint with the Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD), but said he had not received an update on the case. Channel 7HD accompanied him to the division on September 23 to seek a progress report.
The broadcaster also checked the hospital's status with the Department of Health Service Support. The department reportedly confirmed that the facility is legally registered and has a valid operating licence.
The doctor named in the complaint also appeared in the Medical Council of Thailand register and has held a medical licence since 1989. Channel 7HD said its checks produced conflicting information concerning the doctor's background and qualifications.
No official statement has been issued by the authorities or the hospital.
