Democrat party leader urges speedy revocation of Yingluck’s Thai passport

BANGKOK: -- The Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva yesterday called on the government to immediately revoke the Thai passport of fugitive ex-premier Yingluck Shinawatra, reasoning that any delay could backfire and tarnish the image of the military junta.

His call came as the government still did not take any action or give reason why it remains hesitant to revoke her passport although she has defied the court’s ban to leave the country, and arrest warrant has been issued for her.

He said her escape and arrest warrant for refusal of court appearance met criteria for the revocation of passport.

He needs to make sure his other passports are in order before it's his turn.

Sometimes WHAT a politician says matters (no, really!). But, sometimes it is the WHO and WHEN that is significant.

I started wondering about the reason for him to suddenly be worried about the image of the Junta or for the Yingluck matter. This isn't really an issue for the Democrats; they aren't in power and have no responsibility for Yingluck's journey.

Coming on the heels on his "exoneration" for the events of 2010, I wonder if the secret paymasters of the Democrat party are grooming him to return to politics to (again!) provide a soft, civilian face to the Thai political scene. Think about it; the current PM does not have a good image (especially on the international side which is important for Thai tourism and business), and would certainly face legitimacy challenges if he were to continue for too much longer. And frankly, he is not very good at his job.

However, 'Mark' coming back to the PM's chair would provide an instant reaction; it would be proclaimed as a 'return to civilian rule' with smiles all around.

With this public comment against the 'Reds' and in favour of the 'Military/Yellow' folks, is this the first step in making a public alliance?

Food for thought...

"Food for thought..."

Unfortunately likely to give many Thais indigestion.

What a loathsome creature Abhisit is. Like something unpleasant stuck to the bottom of your shoe.

Still, he can afford to be smug since he sits firmly on the yellow side of the fence. He has the gall to talk about Yingluks passport when he has just walked from a murder rap on a technicality.

Does he still hold dual citizenship? He seemed "sheepish" about that fact in the past.

I've often wondered whether that was on the cards for a long time, in fact from the very start. The very start being when realisation dawned in the salons and officers clubs of Bangkok that Abhisit was on course to lose the 2011 election.

The junta needs a successor, who can present (be presented) as a return to civilian government. Abhisit ticks the boxes - at least as far as the Junta are concerned.

I suppose the alternative could be government formed by a great movement ( led by the great movement himself...)

doubt many thai tourists care about the PM image, i doubt most of them even know who the current PM is; they are consumed , on their holiday, on pragmatic touristy things, with the smarter ones factoring in safety

He's been exonerated on an amazing number of issues (dual citizenship, draft dodging, questionable military rank/service, murder), any one of which would have landed a red in the hoose gow.

Amazing isn't it? He must have superb legal representation.

He doesn't need superb legal representation, when he's got the man wielding S44 to protect him. Anything can be arranged by the almighty one.

Oh yes, let's turn every criticism of a politician you like into a "but but the Red..." tantrum.
