People in the southern province of Narathiwat have begun to register their motorcycles with sidecars with police under a pilot programme to prevent the vehicles from being turned into motorcycle bombs for violent incidents in the southern border provinces.

On Thursday (Sept 7) morning, police set up a table near a police kiosk behind the Narathiwat municipality market for the people to register their vehicles.

More than 800 people registered their motorbikes with sidecars in the morning. Most of them work as porters delivering goods at fish piers and traders at fresh markets.

Pol Col Charoen Thammakhan, the Muang district police chief, said the registration of motorcycles with sidecars is intended to prevent them from being used to hide and deliver bombs into the municipality and surrounding areas.
