NESDB told to work on finding jobs for the elderly

BANGKOK: -- PM’s Office Minister Suvit Maesincee has told the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) to come up with measures to help the elderly find employment.

Suvit said on Thursday that he had told the NESDB to speed up coordination with the Labour Ministry to carry out a survey of the number of elderly people who would need employment to live their lives.

 

“The survey must find out how many elderly people are still physically fit and want to work. Then, we will find them proper work that need not be permanent or high-paid, but jobs that should be appropriate for the knowledge, capability and physical fitness of the elderly,” Suvit said.

 

A recent survey found that there were 11.68 million elderly people and about 40.3 per cent or 4.7 million of them were still working.

 

The NESDB has estimated that in about 20 years, 30 per cent of Thai population will be made up of elderly people.

Haven't these idiots heard that in a few decades robots and computers will be doing most of the work elderly Thais might be capable of - and more than half the population will need a state-provided UBI (Universal Basic Income) simply to survive?

 

This reality apart, it is outrageous that the vast majority of working Thais, after toiling for decades for a relative pittance, now face the prospect of being dragooned back into the workforce and made to contribute to their own retirement.

 

A decent state pension should be everyone's right after a lifetime of labour. There's no shortage cash in this booming economy where the rich flaunt their privilege so arrogantly and often - just a shortage of political will to give ordinary folk a decent shake.

 

Clearly, this is not going to change so long as power remains in the hands of a non-elected bunch of nepotistic army brass-hats and their well-heeled friends and relations.

 

Were I Thai, I would be campaigning vigorously for an early election and march these tin-soldier politicians back to the barracks where they rightfully belong.

probably can work at street stalls selling snacks and small things you might need on the way to work or on the way home .........OOOOPS.......

 

that is what many were doing before the streets were "liberated"  by the military......
