Phuket tunnel, Chiang Mai improvements and new Bangkok expressway route all in pipeline

Phuket is set to get a "gateway" road tunnel leading to the island's tourist beaches in what authorities are saying will be the first of its kind in Thailand.

 

The tunnel will help to eliminate accidents that occur on the treacherous hill leading to Patong beach, said Sutthisak Watthanawinit talking to Daily News about the progress in several major road development projects yesterday.

 

The "Krathu to Patong" road is soon expected to be opened to bidding, said Sutthisak.

 

But first an environmental impact study must be completed. If it passes the EIA it will be subject to government approval and then bidding.

 

He said the environmental study was key as the project would include a substantial tunnel that he said was a first of its kind in Thailand. The tunnel would help solve the accident problems associated with the hill and act as a gateway to the provinces many tourist beaches.

 

In Bangkok tenders to build a new road from Rama 3 - Dao Khanong - the outer Ringroad (west) are expected to begin next month. Sutthisak said he expects building of the new expressway to begin in April or May of

next year.

 

He also spoke of plans being looked into to solve traffic problems with major new arteries in Chiang Mai. Studies are being conducted for roads that would better connect the airport and outlying districts with the downtown area.

 

He said that initial decisions regarding improvements in Chiang Mai and Khon Kaen would likely be made in October. Details regarding Khon Kaen were not reported by Daily News.

 

Much of the activity in Chiang Mai and Khon Kaen concerns exactly what level of funding will be shouldered by the government and the private sector.

But maybe the government decided business wants the changes, then business should pay for it.

To be fair after what, maybe 3-4 years of construction there's at least one lane open now on the new underpass on the Superhighway at the 1001 (Mae Jo Road) intersection. That's real progress

The only way to fix Chiang Mai traffic is overpasses/ raised highways and they'll never be the money there to build them. There's all these wonderful underpasses (why is CM so obseesed with underpasses by the way??) on North/ South routes (Supererhighway, Somphot CM Road 3029, outer ring road 121) but god help you if you're trying to drive east or north east on the 118 or 1001. As for Nimman say at the intersection at Maya - there's no hope there ever.

I can't help but marvel at the infrastructure development planned to take place in Thailand. Now there are complex "gateways" to provide access to the countless "hubs". There will be high speed trains criss-crossing the country and modernisation of slow speed trains and dual tracks being laid. There will be ring-roads in Bangkok and new traffic arteries in Chiang Mai and Khon Kaen.

But the real marvel will be if any of these projects ever get off the ground. The budget is already deep in the red and will be dragged even further into the mire with purchases of new grandiose naval, air force and ground forces armament.  

It will be interesting to see what sacrifices the people of Thailand will have forced upon them by the Generals to pay for all this.

why a tunnel in Phuket?......if it must be done than why not just carve (U shape) a road through the mountain..open ceiling...that's it

That is where all this will stay In the pipeline. There is no money to do this and they know it . Maybe keeping  a few Generals in a job talking about it  Be interesting to see where the money comes from to buy those crappy subs My guess is education hospitals wont be getting any extra  cash in the near future The Thai future is in those subs stuff the people
