Traffic check on Sukhumvit and Tongkloom-Talman

Featured Replies

Today before Noon trapped two times in traffic check. Was on the way to darkside of Pattaya. First on Sukhumvit across from Underwater World an then on Tongkloom Talman heading the airfield. Both times they checked the driver licence and (!) insurance. Was driving my motorcycle with wife and helmet. All motorcycles was checked .. farang and thai ..

The wife just said that she was on her way to a business meeting ,i smiled and they waved us through. ,we were driving a car .The wife is in business and dresses quite smartly and i find that she gets treated with respect? sorry if i sound  "snobby" i really dont mean to "as i is quite common really guv" but do the police treat you differently if you look nicely dressed?

.. you are waved through .. maybe you are waving (1000 Baht) too ;-)

My wife and i were checked 3 times yesterday
Once and then again 30 yards again.
Perhaps they thought my driving licence might have expired in the 20 seconds since the last police man checked it.

Only ever paid a bribe once that was about 8 years ago in BKK and that was only so i did not have to go back to get my licence , otherwise i have never ever been asked for or offered a bribe .

It's an ATM machine for the police.  Charge you a few hundred baht for infractions, let you go, and repeat in a few weeks.

We say the same in the UK about the speed cameras, just money makers for the government. At the end of the day if we were within the speed limits we wouldn't get fined. Been caught a few times and no one to blame but myself at the end of it...

But the big difference is, in the UK, it gets recorded.  Your insurance goes up and you get points on your record.  Here, nothing like that.  So you're free to continue to commit the same offense, and pay bribes again, and again, and again.

Don't dissagree at all with that, on the other hand I would prefer to keep my money in my own pocket especially for just run of the mill going too fast and turning at lights etc.
For the life of me I cannot understand locals riding without lids and continually having 200+ Baht fines when they may not earn great money in the first place

Understood.  Until one of those kids runs into you.  Happened to a friend of mine.  14 year old came out of a small soi and hit him.  Ended up in the hospital for a week.  No reimbursement for the bills.  No retribution.  Still has problems with his shoulder some 4 years later.

I'm not following you now, I don't condone any of the illegal actions here, in many of my posts I write that people should adhere to the rules and be more aware of others. My original point being that if you follow the rules you will not be in the position to pay any fines as you have done nothing wrong. Should you break the rules then accept the consequences (repeatedly in a lot of peoples cases) there are many postings relaying tales of having to pay fines for infractions and playing the hard luck story, follow the rules is all I am saying then the fines will not apply.....

You're a bit out of date. Riding with no lid has been 400 baht for years. That's the cheapest fine available.

The explanation for over 90% of behaviour in Thailand is "can't be arsed". This is the correct explanation here.
