Commerce Min urges farmers to grow organic produce as global demand rises

SUPHANBURI, 20 September 2017 (NNT) - The Ministry of Commerce is determined to increase exports and domestic consumption of organic farm goods.

Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn visited a sufficiency economy learning center in U-thong district of Suphanburi province to observe policy implementation for organic agriculture. According to her, farmers at the learning center have successfully developed an organic produce-processing factory, in addition to their organic vegetable farms, and earned sustainable incomes.

The Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives are now encouraging agriculturists to grow crops organically, amid increasing global demand. Currently, the global organic food market is valued at three trillion baht per year, and has been rising by 20 percent per year.

Those interested will have the opportunity to learn from experts in the fields of production, cultivation, and marketing to help them get started. Farmers will also be encouraged to showcase their products in and outside of Thailand to promote domestic and overseas consumption of organic products from Thailand.

Difficult to get qualified for 100% organic here.....the widespread use of dangerous herbicides and pesticides would prevent this.

Just calling foods "organic" is meaningless in Thailand, with companies like Monsanto pushing their chemicals.

I agree with ChrisY1. What is the point of this government action if consumers have little faith in Thai organic products? Proper regulation should come first.

Thai organic basil. Remember that one.

Setting up a central market for organic produce would help, Somchai doesn't want to sit on 15 tons of beans that he cant sell in bulk. Also as someone has mentioned, strict regulations and checks as to what is organic. If my field is surrounded by rice farmers spraying pesticides and using chemical fertilizer then I don't have a hope in hell of classing my produce as organic.

if anyone has tried to grow anything here they will understand its just about impossible to grow things here with all the bugs ect,

ive been here growing things for years and you only get a 1/4 of your crop without using chemicals we dont use chemicals on our place but i dont mind taking a small loss for good food,

true, but 75% loss isn't small, there are organic pesticides made from chillie and various other herbs.

i believe the thai farming community already tried this; the "Q label" , i seem to recall; when tested, using UK labs, the foods failed miserably, same or more chemicals;

absent stringent testing here i , like many farmers, only trust what we grow ourselves

You won't see them, they've all buggered off overseas to 'showcase' their produce.

Good way to go for home consumption but not really practical for commercial scale.

A lot, and I mean a lot (not all), of so called organic produce overseas is not organically grown. Clever marketing mostly.

being organic can go wrong in many ways and you might not even know it,

we have pigs. now if our food isnt organic, then there poo used on our feed wouldnt be organic, its not to bad for us as the poo stays for a year at least in 4x4mt corigated steel sqs till its ready to go onto the land,

just an example how it can go wrong,

planting marigolds with most veg will keep a lot of bugs away, onions with carrot great, there are many ways to keep some at bay,

carrots grow better high off the floor in rings

Hydroponics or aquaponics are the only systems I know that you can be fairly sure is organic, if care is taken at all stages.

Change your crops folks; yet again. We are the military and we know best about agriculture and we are here to help you.

It has previously been reported that Organic Certification can easily be bought under the counter from the relevant authorities.

Hydroponics is the OPPOSITE to organic. Being totally dependent on artificial inputs. Aquaponics is as organic as you make it, being dependent on micro organisms..
