Coronation Street icon Liz Dawn, best known as Vera Duckworth, dies aged 77

Coronation Street legend Liz Dawn, best known for playing the iconic Vera Duckworth, has died aged 77, it has been confirmed by her family.

 

A statement said: ‘We are devastated and heartbroken at the passing of our much-loved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother, the incredible Liz Dawn. Liz died peacefully last night at home with her loving family around her.

 

‘She has been the love, light and inspiration in our lives and we are bereft at her passing.’

Jack and Vera were always the comic relief. A pair of larger than life characters whose antics mirrored so many couples in the area in which we lived (Bolton / Wigan).

 

I was brought (dragged) up on a diet of Corrie, Emmerdale Farm and Crossroads (gawd that was awful), never really "got" Eastenders.

 

I will not admit to watching any soaps now, honest!

 

RIP Liz, you brought pleasure to many.

Just think "Neighbours" set in the north west UK (only far better worse).

 

I believe it has the record of being the longest running soap, ever (9,256 episodes since December 1960).
