Can't be long and they will use Zika, Malaria, and Dengue to promote their "medical hub" campaigns.

Zica cases:

Between January and November 2016, the Thailand Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) had reported 686 Zika cases

Dengue:

More than 136,000 cases of dengue fever, with 126 fatalities so far this year (2017)

Malaria:

4,512 cases in 2016.

Btw.....For all those of you out there that get eaten alive by mosquitos.
I never have this problem.
I put it down to 3 reasons.

1. I am not type O blood group. I am B+ Mozzies prefer type O the most common group.

2. I always wash in the shower with Yellow Dettol Soap. I am not the only person that has realized that this appears to be a deterrent. You can also make up your own spray deterrent using diluted Listerine ( 1 part Listerine 3 parts water).

3. Surrounding myself with type O people.

Are you a mosquito magnet?

Your premise that your are or aren’t may well be wrong - it  can be partly to do with perception and partly to do with your reaction to a bite. Some people who claim they are not bitten in reality simply don’t know as the bite leaves no reaction nor mark - they are the perfect mozzie victim!

How do they find you?

Mozzies use 3 cues - visual, olfactory, and thermal cues to home in on their human targets,

1.     They use CO2 plume to set off towards you - they detect CO2 up to 50 metres away!

2.     They “see” you - as a silhouette - this starts at about 10 metres - movement helps - mozzies actually can’t detect complex images they are programmed to home in on silhouettes - e.g a buffalo or in the case of Aedes - a human

3.     Just centimeters away they use your body heat to home in. - at about 20 centimeters they home in for the kill on your “thermal plume” and moisture

So to avoid bites you need to minimise  the actors you display that attract the mosquitoes.

"People with high concentrations of steroids or cholesterol on their skin surface attract mosquitoes," - body builders beware - you body is attractive for all the wrong reasons.

There is also a well documented genetic propensity. (up to 80% even!!)

Then there is blood type - well that would also connect with genetics - but in reality there is only one study - done in 2013 - that claims that under lab conditions that those with type O blood are more than twice as likely than type A to be bitten with B somewhere in the middle.  It appears that some people give off secretions that identify their blood type and give appetising signals to mozzies.

Mosquitoes also target people who produce excess amounts of certain acids, such as uric acid, and heavy breathers - e.g. those emitting large amounts of CO2

Mosquitoes can smell their dinner from an impressive distance of up to 50 meters,

Larger people and pregnant women tend to give off more carbon dioxide

Movement and heat also attract mosquitoes.

Contrary to popular belief, DEET has been shown not only to be effective but also one of the safest repellents (increased time effective up to 33% - more is a waste of DEET) - DEET has been used since WW2, so plenty of time for side-effects to manifest.

More recently, Picaridin is proving to be as effective as DEET -  it is claimed to be more pleasant to use as it is odorless

Most “natural repellents either have limited efficacy or none at all.

Zika is carried by the same mosquito that carries Dengue - so any move to reduce the population has to be a good idea. Apart from the possible devastating  effects on unborn children, Zika is a relatively mild fever and much less prevalent or potentially virulent than dengue.

Due to te massive publicity Zika received in Brazil before the Olympics, government around the world are determined to keep the numbers down as the will have a direct impact on tourism....oddly more so than Dengue or Malaria which are more common and in the case of Dengue, endemic throughout Thailand.

So the story for expats is stay in bed in a cold room then

Oh that is a great add for moving here, retire at 50 die or piss off at 65 as no insurance will cover you and stay in bed to avoid the mosquitoes and Dengue

No wonder there are so many depressed expats here, sod it where is the balcony.

If you stayed in a cold room, you would be the only source of heat and stick out like a sore thumb.

Mosses do not like the cold do they? So maybe best then to find a balcony as so many do and avoid those who try and steel from you.

I don't ask everyone I meet their blood type but the soap works and socks at night.

And get some cat nip plants.

Watch out for the local repellents as they contain Carbon Tet which is Really nasty stuff.

Thanks, always looking for mosquito deterrents, I will buy some Dettol soap and give it a try, I have a bottle of Dettol disinfectant ,wonder if that diluted would do the same, I can try the Yellow soap first. Mosquitoes love my blood, even after showering several times a day, maybe they like a nice fresh clean body to attack, the worse time is when really hot and no matter what I do the 'sweat magnet' comes in to force, Cooling-talcum powder works okay, some times.

"Hello what blood type are you"

Possibly the worst chat up line in history.

Some Asian countries...Korea and Japan beleive many things are related to blood type. B+ men are not at the top of the dating list in Korea due to personal traits that make them (me included) a bad choice for a long term relationship. I read up this and the details were very accurate for the way I behave and react. Also diet is another item, everything listed that was not good for a B+ person was everything I can't stand to eat...so maybe my body was telling me this not my taste.
As for the mozzies I have been in too many tropical countries to list here and everyone around me had/has bite marks and wields moaned about them but I never seem to get bitten and when I do there is basically no mark. I don't claim be totally free from their attention but the underlying thing I have always done is the Dettol soap....I always have a pack of 4 bars in my suitcase.
