Bride-to-be in Prachin Buri considers civil lawsuit against runaway groom

The family of a would-be bride is considering a civil lawsuit against the runaway groom for the cost of preparations for the wedding reception.

The bride, 24, whose name was withheld, waited in vain for her affianced, Boonyoung, 26, whose surname was withheld, at the wedding ceremony on Sunday.

The groom later called to say he had not been able to raise Bt200,000 in cash and five baht in gold for the dowry in time.

The wedding ceremony was planned at the bride’s house in Tambon Yanree in Kabin Buri district, Prachin Buri province.

The bridge’s aunt, who was referred to only as “Bee”, said the bride had filed a complaint with police, who suggested the family file a civil lawsuit for the cost of the wedding preparations instead.

Bee said the family might appoint a lawyer to demand compensation of Bt100,000. She said the bride’s family had hired a caterer to serve a Chinese-style lunch for 40 tables, which cost Bt2,200 per table, printed invitations for 200 guests, and incurred various other expenses.

Bee said her niece had been in a relationship with Boonyong for six years before she agreed to marry him. She also had quit her job a Samut Prakan factory and planned to work abroad with him, the aunt added.

The bride returned to her rented room in Samut Prakan on Monday to pack her belongings to return to Prachin Buri. She also planned to return her rented wedding dress.

Bee said the family of the groom had sent her an SMS telling her not to file a complaint with police or file a lawsuit, while threatening that the groom would accuse her niece of having a relationship with another man.

“This further hurt our feelings, so my niece will never go back to him,” Bee said.

So instead of the bride just telling him to forget about the dowry and pay it at a later date, she lost money on the catering, waisted guests time and now wants to sue the groom for money he obviously doesn't have and all because of her not wanting to look stupid in front of her Family.

What an out of date tradition.

All things considered, the fall out from the grooms no show indicates it was probably a good thing they didn’t end up married.

Almost as out of date as the brides family paying for wedding/reception in western cultures...

.

Ouch!

.

Which not quite as outdated of the whole concept of marriage imo. All for show amd a waste of money. Particularly when so many end in divorce 5 or so years later...

See post above...sorry

If they were prepared to spend 100k on the wedding and only ask 200k dowry......then dual pricing seems to extend beyond the retail sector.

This is the real love in Thailand.

seems everything in Thailand boils down to how much you can get, always thought there was no price on love, looks like that doesnt apply here, its not how much you love someone but how much you can pay. Maybe there is some truth in what the grooms family are saying if the marriage was a case of how much was to be paid

Or maybe the dowry was supposed to cover the cost the bride had for the wedding? Just a thought.

I doubt the guests time were wasted as the groom quit well ahead of the wedding.

And no “chow down” for them either.

I agree with you but usually the dowry is not used to pay for the wedding, it goes straight to the parents or granny so their is some difference.

Lawyer will cost 100k

dowry

The old chestnut, some will sell anything for cash and gold, its about time they dropped it.

The money is needed by the couple to start their new lives, not the parents who are at the near end of theirs.

Farang Time 2 million.
