Chiang Mai to Naypyidaw/Myanmar by (rental) car?

Featured Replies

ADVISE asked:

Does someone has the experience to drive through the mountains from CM to Naypyidaw by a rental car?

Route: Chiang Mai >> Kho Lam/Burma >> Nayyidaw/Burma and back

I'm curious if a member did this trip and back and want to share his/her experience?

My buddy just tried with his private car and was turned away at the border.  I've got a friend here who's married to a gal from Burma.  They have to leave their car at the border.  But I'm no expert on what's required to do this, just telling you some personal experiences.

I don't think what you are listing is an official border.  Here's a list:

For sure can't use the Tachilek border crossing.

I dont think that any rental company will allow their vehicles to be taken outside of Thailand in any direction, simply because Thai insurance is not valid there.

IMPOSSIBLE with rental car, with your OWN car can be done BUT needs lots of paperwork and need use agent in Myanmar. Costs for10 days about  $2,500.

Plenty of tours do the trip now by car and motorcycle, so if you want best do so as member of a tour.

Entering at Tachilek, you can ONLY travel overland as far as Kentung at which point you need fly,

Thanks a lot for the answers....didn't know it was THAT difficult.

Better drop the plan by (rental) car.
