Schools in Ubon

It looks like it’s been a while since this was last covered so I’m hoping to hear some more positive stories.......

Possibly looking to relocate to ubon with our children aged 11 and 9.  We’d be looking to put them into an international school and would appreciate some views on the options.

We would be coming from the UK so children have the English language.

I would also be looking for work, good level of English language, written and spoken (native speaker) but no degree.  What options would be available to me?

Many thanks for replies

As far as I know there are no really full International schools in Ubon. A few schools have "international programmes" but the standard at these programmes I have been told is very variable.

Actually I wouldn't worry too much about sending your children to International schools. Speak English at home and get your children into the best local Thai schools. They will be okay. I went through all of this twenty years ago and I have friends going through the same thing these days. At the end of the day, your children are fluent in both English and Thai (maybe Lao) and it all works out for the best.

Finding a teaching job without a degree is almost impossible. That is getting a job the correct way with a work permit and visa. Maybe some private school may hire you, but I doubt if they can help you with all the proper paper work for a visa and work permit. Probably others with more teaching experience can answer this question better than I can

Check out this one.

Located North outskirt of town in a nice campus close by the HWY 231 Ring Road.

I sent my son to kindergarten there for awhile and was very underwhelmed. I've also heard from two parents that their bilingual children were basically used to win competitions to make the school look good. Or at least that was their impression. I sat next to the guy who started the school years ago and when I asked him about the school, the first thing he told me about was how many competitions they win and how many kids they send overseas. Here is the official website.

Both Nari and Benjama have an "English program" but like Michael said, they don't exactly have a good reputation in the foreigner community. Nari had a pedophile teacher arrested last year. I've heard Thai parents say good things. I knew a family that drove down from Mukdahan every week just for the Benjama program. I also know Thai families who just board their kids at schools in Bangkok because they refuse to send their kids to any schools in Ubon.

There's the Hua Qiao Thai/Chinese/English school. It has a reputation as a typical strict Chinese school. I know an adult who went through their school and was able to complete graduate programs overseas. He also did tutoring every night and on the weekends and no childhood.

The 7th Day Adventists started a Christian school downtown using American curriculum. I might be checking that out soon. I've talked to a couple Thai doctors that send their grade school kids there and they are pretty happy with it. It's an all English program. I don't know much about it yet but my impression is that it's as close to an international school as you can get. https://www.uaims.ac.th/

Assumption is building another school? Is that what you mean? Where and how is it different from the existing school?

I don’t think it has anything to do with assumption or any other school from Ubon as far as I am aware of. The link should provide more information. It’s a Christian Adventist school hence depending on your religion / belief. From what I read on their website, everything will be taught in English and based on the American education system.

No, Assumption is not building another school. This school is a 7th Day Adventist school which is completely different to the Assumption Catholic school. All Catholic schools in Thailand, as far as I know, teach using the main Thai curriculum. The 7th Day school is using the American curriculum.

Catholic schools are in every province in Thailand. In central Ubon alone, there are four big Catholic schools and I guess in the whole province at least twenty. This afternoon driving into Ubon from Mukdahan, I noticed a sign up for a new Catholic school being built about 12 km north of Ubon on the way to Muang Sam Sip.

I am a practicing Catholic. I go to Sunday Mass every week. But I would not send my son to a Catholic school in Ubon. The teaching standards there are lower than at the good state schools. Also the Catholic schools take in the drop-outs from the other schools. Send your children if possible, to the best state schools in Ubon, if you want your children to be taught in Ubon.

I have to disagree with you. My daughter and granddaughter have attended Catholics schools for over 5 years.

My daughter started at Assumption this year and had take a admission test to get into the school. They only accepted 13 new enrollments for her grade.

I have a friend that had a daugher in Benjamat and another one in Assumption. He called Benjamat bend your wallet because in the end it cost more than Assumption..

My son started at Assumption when we moved from BKK.  It is as good as the full International School that he previously attended.

Assumption offers ESP and a SSP options:  One has English, Maths and Science with either native-English speaking teachers and the other has English speaking Filipino or Thai teachers.

Thanks to you all for taking the time to reply. After careful consideration I think we are going to scrap our idea for now.  Our children are settled and doing well at the moment and whilst there will never be an ideal time for such a big move, for. Ow it’s not necessary so we’ll put it on hold.

Thanks again
