The eyesore of piles of sand recently heaved out of Surin Beach have caused much discontent among local residents, but the new seawall will be installed ‘underground’ to maintain the beauty of the shoreline, Mr MaAnn assured. Photos: Supplied

PHUKET: MaAnn Samran, the outspoken chief of the Cherng Talay Tambon Administration Organisation (OrBorTor), has defended the current state of Surin Beach as backhoes heave large troughs in the sand to prepare the site for the installation of a seawall to prevent further coastal erosion.

Mr MaAnn’s defence of the construction literally on Surin Beach seawall follows several complaints from local residents sent directly to The Phuket News.

However, Mr MaAnn told The Phuket News late yesterday (Nov 13), “I have been receiving a large number of complaints from locals over the years asking why I have not done something about the seawall at Surin Beach crumbling and the sand being dragged away.

MaAnn - is he still there ?  Lot's of money available .... all in his big fat pockets. Over 20 years I have personally met many corrupt local leaders  but this guy takes the cake and eats it.

do Thais ever do research? common knowledge that seawalls cause beach erosion.  Waves hit the wall and carry the sand out to sea. The natural progression is for a beach to be constantly moving inland a little each season. The wall stops the sand from returning after a storm.  A well known fact.

How does MaAnn still have greedy paws in any decision making at Surin Beach? He sold off the beach to the restaurants and clubs. It was so bad they came in and leveled the place. He's responsible for the football stadium that has never held a game. He's simply the worst person in the world to be holding that position of OrBorTor. He also makes decisions for Bang Tow and Layan beaches. Can someone check this guys bank records? He surely needs to be replaced. Everything the guy touches is screwed up. It's a disgrace.

You and a previous poster seem to know a great deal about this guy. Why not take advantage of the dob in a corrupt person scheme? Or are both now non residents of Phuket?

Everyone knows about this guy here. For some reason he seems untouchable.

There are some people here who when you ask why they cannot be dealt with the answer is 'too powerful'. I had this answer off a very senior gov't official here who is a friend. We were discussing the presence of a very big gambling complex in the center  of the island and why nothing could be done about it- guess who the main figure linked to that was! It takes a very brave man to take on the likes of Ma-Ann and a foreigner just isn't going to risk it so he just continues afoot.

It takes movement from Bangkok to take action against them as they are untouchable, bearing in mind the money flow bangkok seldom goes after the big wigs  although with the start of a crackdown on police and immmigration officers this may change..
