In post-Asia trip speech, Trump makes news ... with water

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump went on television on Wednesday to recap his just-completed trip abroad, but it was his pause to refresh that ended up making news.

The day after returning from a 12-day journey to Asia, Trump delivered a more than 20-minute live address to tout his accomplishments on the trip.

Dry mouth got in the way.

Partway through his remarks, the president, who was speaking loudly to the assembled press, paused as cameras rolled to have a drink. Foiled at first when he could not locate any water on his podium, reporters pointed out there was a bottle on a table to his right. He reached for the bottle of water and sipped.

Trump's drink of water lit up social media, evoking comparisons with a televised address given by U.S. Senator Marco Rubio in 2013 during which he grabbed awkwardly for a water bottle.

Trump mocked Rubio during a campaign event last year for his water drinking on live television, calling him a "total choke artist."

Rubio, who ran against Trump for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, had some tongue-in-cheek advice for the president in return.

"Similar, but needs work on his form," Rubio wrote on Twitter on Wednesday. "Has to be done in one single motion & eyes should never leave the camera. But not bad for his 1st time."

Others on social media noted the irony of Trump's choice of an imported refreshment - Fiji Water - during a speech in which one of the main themes was a pledge to reduce U.S. trade deficits with foreign nations.

Trump took another sip from the water bottle before ending his speech. He left, slightly more hydrated, without taking questions from reporters.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the social media reaction to his water drinking.

He knew where that bottle was, but he was looking for his usual bottle, the one with Silicon nipple.

translation - Trump did an amazing job on the Asian tour, more accomplishments in the Pacific rim than the last 4 presidents combined and we are so upset seeing him triumph like this after all the nonsense we have run on him for the last 2 years that we ginny-up some inane article about Trump having a dry mouth while speaking. Reuters, you are an embarrassment, owning up to being flat-out wrong on POTUS 45, and ending the immature negative drivel would be the mature route.

Very disappointed he didn't turn it into wine.

So no Borjomi available?

Putin - send a case immediately to remind Trump of the home country.

I thought this was going to be a story about him walking on water...

2017 Trump should take the advice of 2013 Trump:

Next time Marco Rubio should drink his water from a glass as opposed to a bottle—would have much less negative impact.

No, but his supporters have already turned the story into a whine.

trump's water break was definitely funny just on it's own, especially the Mussolini pose on his face as he opened the liddle (sic) bottle, but normally it would be a nothing. The reason it is a something is that the disgusting excuse for a president that we are currently CURSED with used such insults on EVERYONE to elevate his clownish self to the presidency in the first place. So he's just going to have to (FAIRLY) take the derision and abuse about his water incident because as we all know he is incapable of apologizing for anything. If he did say something like I was wrong to make fun of Rubio for the water thing (which he'll never do of course) then people would wonder why doesn't he apologize for every childish insult he ever made in the campaign (not to mention the racist way he got into politics in the first place, the birther movement).

So in effect, a really trivial water thing is incredibly revealing (for anyone that hasn't noticed) about the character (lack thereof) of the troll in chief.

Too bad it didn't happen BEFORE the election!

If grabbing women by the p*ssy didn t stop him from winning the election, I doubt drinking water would have either.  The leader of the free world is a joke and we are stuck with him for 3 more years.

Unfortunately we are also stuck with the losers of the election whining and bitching for the next 3 years as well.

I would love to see a bilateral meeting between Trump and Boris Johnson!  The late night satirists and impersonators would have a gold mine!

Troll post removed.

I didn’t not care if Trump drank water during a speech. I want to see if Trump can still keep talking when Putin takes a drink of water.

I got that.

Just confused why Trump being a hypocrite is news.

I understand your stance. Initially, I thought so to. But I’ve concluded that We should all hope that it continues to be news, because as long as it continues to be news, we can feel some reassurance that such outrageous hypocrisy has not been entirely normalized.

Who is "we"? He's massively unpopular in both the USA and globally except for a few nations.
