Thailland Elite, and Accounting

Featured Replies

Hi all , Been following the forum for some time, and now in a position to be preparing to spend more time in LOS.

Been looking at the Thialand elite , have read the threads and take on board both sides of the argument ,

But just wondering if there is any difference in the providers , there is a thailand elit.org    and a thailand elit.com , are they all the same , or is there a main office that offers the service.

Secondly . any advice on a decent accountant , for completing annual tax returns , nothing complicated as am retired , but as I have been travelling for some time , I am better being based in some place permenantly for tax etc.

Thanks for any help

Re taxes, what country?

I will be based in Thailand , for tax ,

So, Thai taxes, not your home country, where ever that might be.

You may not have to pay taxes here unless you bring money into the country during the same year it was earned.

This webpage has basic info for Thai income tax. http://www.rd.go.th/publish/6045.0.html

You say you are retired and have been travelling for many years.

Would that mean that you are over 50? If so you dont need the rather expensive ThaiElite visa. You can get a retirement extension for just 1900B per year (assuming you can prove income of over 800kB/year, or can deposit the same in a bank here, or some mixture of the two). It is very easy to obtain.

Thai tax is so simple that you are unlikely to need an accountant. A translator would be of more use. There are benefits to not sending your income here in the year in which you receive it, and these have been extensively discussed. Not sure how many Thai accountants even know about this, as Thai accountants seem to be mostly involved in preparing accounts for small companies.

You can obtain a Thai TIN just by asking for it, though they might want you to show some sort of Thai income to justify you getting it. The interest from the deposit mentioned above would do, and you can claim a refund on it.

You are automatically considered 'resident for tax' if you stay in the country longer than 180 days in any tax year. Thailand use self assessment and it is up to you to declare any tax liability. It's unlikely, unless you're earning income in Thailand or brining income earned abroad to Thailand that is earned in the same tax year, that you will have a tax liability.

I fully agree with you, but we don't want to restart this debate here...

Also the weight of the benefits of TE depend on where you are going to stay, out in Issan they are close to zero, in Bangkok, Chiang Mai or Pattaya they are those provided by a good visa agent.

There is normally one in each district. In some cases more than one.

Click on a region on this map to to find the local offices. http://www.rd.go.th/publish/38156.0.html

KittenKong is quite right though and why waste money unnecessarily?

People waste money on all sorts of things. Some people find the PE visa a convenient way to stay, and if they can afford to "waste" their money on that convenience, why not. If TE were to issue me with a 20 year visa on day one, I might waste my money on one, until then I'll stick with less convenient cheaper options. Each to their own.
