Professor resigns after university launches probe

Cambridge University's youngest ever black professor has resigned after mounting questions over his qualifications, academic record and a string of disputed claims about his career and achievements.

Professor Jason Arday announced he was stepping down with immediate effect just hours after the university confirmed it had launched a formal investigation into fresh concerns surrounding his academic qualifications and honorary appointments.

University support evaporates

Arday, 41, has been at the centre of a growing controversy after allegations emerged that sections of his PhD thesis copied the work of another student. While Cambridge said it would not investigate the plagiarism claims because his doctorate was awarded by another university, it confirmed it is examining new information relating to his academic credentials.

The resignation marks a dramatic turnaround for Cambridge, which had initially defended Arday and condemned what it described as attempts to undermine his credibility. But that support appeared to weaken after several universities challenged claims made in his official biography.

Universities dispute career claims

Institutions including Ohio State University, the University of Glasgow and Nelson Mandela University reportedly denied he held the visiting professorships listed on his Cambridge profile. Durham University also confirmed he no longer held any formal position there despite being described as an honorary professor.

Arday has denied wrongdoing and insisted his resignation should not be seen as an admission of guilt. In an emotional statement, he said years of "unrelenting scrutiny and personal attacks" had pushed him beyond what anyone should reasonably be expected to endure. He maintained that his appointment to Cambridge had symbolised hope and opportunity and suggested he intended to return to academic life after taking time away.

Questions continue to mount

The controversy extends beyond his university appointments. Arday has acknowledged inaccuracies in previous accounts of his achievements after questions were raised over claims ranging from charity fundraising and endurance challenges to volunteer work overseas. He has also admitted to errors within his PhD while rejecting suggestions that he deliberately misled people.

Further questions have emerged over qualifications previously listed on his university profile, a book that was announced but never published, and other claims made throughout his academic career.

Political links also scrutinised

The affair has also drawn Labour into the spotlight after it emerged Arday had previously stood as a Labour council candidate and later became a patron of an education charity linked to a government adviser.

For Cambridge, the resignation ends one chapter of an embarrassing saga, but investigations into the wider questions surrounding Professor Arday's academic record are likely to continue.

Quite fascinating that they're making a big deal about plagiarizing when that's really all AI is. My niece who teaches political science at a university told me that 99% of the essays she's getting these days are AI generated. If that isn't plagiarism I don't know what is.

One of my kids holds a senior position in a major London events organisation.

It seems she is the only one who has a grasp of what AI can do.......she is endlessly impressing the board of directors with "her" reports, feedback, risk assessments......555
