What Visa for me?- My (UK) wife working as a teacher

Featured Replies

My wife and I intend to move to Thailand as teachers in Feb 18. At this point, I don’t have a degree but my wife does.

My question is this: once my wife secures work and gets all the required visas and permits to work legally, where does this leave me as her “dependent”?

I will finish my degree later in the year, and hope to then secure legal work.......but what about the interim period? Will my passport be able to reference her visa status (once she is legal)?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I believe once your wife has an extension to stay on the basis of working, you can, indeed, get an extension of stay as her dependent. In the morning @ubonjoe will probably chime in with the details (and you can trust what he says).

Once your wife gets a job offer you can both get single entry non-immigrant visas from a Thai Embassy/Consulate in a neighbouring country. Your wife will need a category 'B' visa, and you'll be issued with a category 'O' visa. When you re-enter Thailand you'll both be granted permission to stay for 90 days. Towards the end of the 90 days your wife can apply for an extension of stay based on her job. Once she has been granted the extension, you can apply for an extension as her husband. Dependency doesn't come in to it. You will effectively piggy back her permit to stay. Both extensions should be organised at the same time.

When you get work yourself you can get an extension of stay in your own right. You'll probably need to go out of Thailand for a new non-immigrant 'B' visa as a prerequisite to getting a work permit/extension of stay.

You should not have any problem getting a visa
