Travelling in and out of Thailand with 2 different passports

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I'm about to go to Hanoi for my next visarun.

My question was to know wether it would be ok to use one passport (swiss, with all my stamps and visas) for thai immigration  (exiting and entering the country again) and another one  (french passport) to enter and exit Vietnam? Bcz French nationals dont need visas for short stays and I'm a bit short for doing a Vietnamese visa, with the holiday tomorrow.

I'm asking this, bcz some consulate (Vientiane) asked me for a copy of the entry stamp + visa for Laos.

Thanks.

When traveling by air, there are no restrictions against switching passports. However, you have spotted the snag when doing this for a visa run. The Thai consulate generally wants to put visas in the passport you used to enter Hanoi. I have found the staff at the Hanoi consulate to be fairly obliging, and hopefully there is nothing in their rules preventing using the Swiss passport for the visa (even though you entered Vietnam with the French passport). I suggest you copy both passport data pages, plus the entry stamp in the French passport, and explain why it is better for you to get the visa in the Swiss one. I predict they will oblige.
