Cadet’s family to sue as Army concludes death from natural causes

THE FAMILY OF cadet Phakhapong “Meay” Tanyakan is dissatisfied with the conclusions of an investigation into the cause of his death and plans to sue the Army.

An investigation into the death of the first-year cadet at Nakhon Nayok’s Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School by an Army committee has been completed and the report handed over to the Supreme Commander of the Army.

While the results were not revealed to the public, a source said the investigation committee concluded that Phakhapong had died of natural causes.

The conclusion matched the preliminary autopsy, which indicated that the cause of death was heart failure.

However, Phakhapong’s family said they were disappointed at the conclusion and intended to sue the Army. A second autopsy has indicated that Phakhapong had suffered a physical attack, raising concerns that corporal punishment may have caused his death.

Phakhapong’s mother, Sukanya Tanyakan, said the family and many others did not agree with the results and would pursue every option to obtain justice regarding his death.

Sukanya said the family had gathered evidence in preparation for litigation, but they could not disclose the details as that might affect the lawsuit.

Air Chief Marshal Chawarat Marungruang, deputy chief of staff and chairman of the investigation committee, said the committee had submitted a full report to Supreme Commander General Thanchaiyan Srisuwan.

“We cannot disclose the result of the investigation yet, as it will be the supreme commander’s decision on what to do with the report.

And if he still has any questions about the result, he may ask the committee to find more information about it in order to avoid a dispute in the future,” Chawarat said.

He has previously said it was the right of the family to sue the Army, but the committee was confident about the integrity of the official investigation.

Meanwhile, Central Institute of Forensic Science (CIFS) director-general Somn Promaros said an autopsy of Phakhapong’s internal organs would be delayed for at least two months because the institute could not retrieve DNA from the organs to confirm his identity as they had been preserved in formalin for too long.

He said the CIFS had asked Ramathibodi Hospital to assist with the DNA test, which would take at least two months to complete.

No integrity in this report. What a shame.

So the damaged organs which may well hold the key to this boys death (beaten to death for walking on a path which his "status" did not allow him to use?) cannot now be tested because they have been stored in preservatives for too long?

How dashed inconvenient! So many awkward problems, which no one could have foreseen seem to thwart the establishments efforts to get to the truth.

Oh well, we'll just have to take their word for it - it was natural causes.

After all it is quite natural to die after having the living daylights beaten out of you for infringing some cadet government "status rule".

So, are we to conclude being beaten to death by your own side is natural in the army?

Join the army. Fight to protect the tiny  percentage of the rich and elite. But be careful not to annoy them, you may be beaten to death.

Oh shock and horror they found it by 'natural causes' who would have geussed there would be no foul play? And that leads to a question how big is that rug that things get swept under? Someone cynical might say quite large..

Who would have thunk it !, the army committed the crime,

and found itself not guilty.not the first time either.

Afraid so…it’s ‘ops normal’ for a pretend army led by bloated parasites who call themselves generals.

It is definitely "natural causes" if it is considered natural in the army for cadets to be pummeled into the ground.

A history of hazing and bullying in the army,  combined with broken bones

and bruising and still the finding of a young man's death is heart failure. :post-4641-1156693976:

Yes , but sadly , 100% predictable.

You will always get the same result when it's the army investigating the army.

May they not submit to intimidation or bribery.....fight for justice for your child, and all kids exposed to torture now and in the future !

So true, and also goes for any other Government institute investigating itself, be it armed forces or civil servants.........circle those wagons boys.

My Son went to a scout camp away day last month. Apparently part of the school Scout curriculum. It was at a nearby Army Camp. He asked me a week later if they were allowed to hit the students. I asked why, and he said his friend was beaten on the backs of his legs with a stick because the little shit soldier ( my words, not his ), though he was not standing to attention correctly.

If students do not attend this awayday / night, they do not pass the scout syllabus. I have already told the school that in no uncertain terms if anyone lays a hand on my Son at the next scout day I will sue the school for negligence......

Good luck with that, you will encounter defamation charges of article number (not-to-be-named)

I have heard of this kind of crime happening in other "civilized" countries but it seems to me that the outcome is usually different! The murderers are charged, stand trial and the rest should be history.
