Police in Kep province arrested a Russian national for using and wearing Cambodian military garb in Kep commune on Wednesday, according to local police. Commune deputy police chief Chim Sothea said the Russian, identified as Viasov Ilya, 37, was arrested at his rental room on Wednesday while he was wearing a Cambodian military uniform.

 

“We cooperated with the town police and officers from the provincial police’s immigration bureau to arrest him because he was found illegally wearing the military uniform,” he said. Mr Sothea said he did not get fully involved in the operation because there was a language barrier, so the Russian was sent to district police for further investigation.

 

Thou Vanthol, deputy district police chief in charge of immigration, said the Russian said he was a veteran military officer who had a leg injury from military service and uses marijuana to ease the pain. “We are questioning him at the office. We don’t know what his purpose is yet for wearing the Cambodian uniform because the investigation is ongoing,” he said.
