Sept. 19th - Was It A Coup D'etat?

Featured Replies

The following quote appeared on page 2 of today's Post:

Gen Vinai, secretary-general of the Council for National Security, said: ''The Sept 19 takeover was not a coup d'etat, but a military intervention. We didn't want to do it, but we had to.''

Was it a coup or not? Any opinions?

Whats this got to do with sports?

Perhaps with your high-level skills as a super-moderator you could change it to general? thanks

Thought maybe it was a sports coup of some kind but then couldn't figure out how a general was involved. Seemed a very odd place to post such a thing :o

Anyway, seems like hair splitting: coup, military intervention. Just another form of spin, IMO

Definitions:

"A sudden and decisive act in politics, usually bringing about a change in government unlawfully and by force"

"A coup d'état (pronounced 'kū dā ta'), or simply a 'coup', is the sudden overthrow of a government, usually done by a small group that just replaces the top power figures. It is different from a revolution, which is staged by a larger group and radically changes the political system. The term is French for "a sudden stroke, or blow, of a state". ..."

So you decide.

Frankly, this particular topic is already being discussed ad nauseum in several threads and after discussion with admin and other mods, we don't see any need to start yet another thread about this topic.
