First national human gene bank to open in 6 months

BANGKOK: -- Thailand's first national human gene bank, which scientists hope will lead to the development of groundbreaking medical treatments, will be open within six months, experts said Wednesday.

Thongchai Thavichachart, head of the Thailand Center of Excellence for Life Science, said the so-called "Bio-Bank" of human genetics would be set up at the Rajanukul Institute, which had already collected 10,000 DNA samples in Bangkok.

"The Bio-Bank can open within six months because we will build it from what already exists," Thongchai said.
