Bid to lure migrant workers home

A senior government official expects the government’s social security fund for local workers will entice Cambodians working abroad to return to the kingdom. Vongsey Visoth, secretary of state at the Economy and Finance Ministry, said on Monday at a public forum on the ministry’s 2018 budget that local workers would get many benefits including a social security fund from the government.

 

He added he was not aware if Cambodians working abroad would be eligible. “Now the government has a policy to provide a social security fund to local workers, I think it could be a mechanism to attract overseas workers to come back to work in the country,” he said.

 

“Besides their monthly salary, they will get more benefits when they retire.” Mr Visoth said Cambodians could earn higher wages working overseas but local workers could still save more money.
