It is rooted in hate and prejudice.

not really.  potentially, but not necessarily.

in this case, it appears to be sensible

policing/profiling based on historical

trends in criminal activity by ethnicity

and/or nationality.

were any of these "tourists" picked up while

visiting temples?  bungee jumping?

parasailing?  riding elephants on a jungle trek?

no.  i didn't think so.

Yeah, go get those criminals.

Racial profiling rules man.

How dare those bastards be black.

(Shouldn’t be necessary, but: sarcasm alert).

…and yet no one said anything about the story before this on the news page which claimed a BRITISH man set fire to his girlfriend and showed a white man - do you think they should have listed their nationalities? NEWSFLASH most African countries do not have thriving immigration policies - take Zimbabwe for instance where MOST of the white farming population has been systematically murdered in cold blood!!

If people are detained and questioned on the basis of colour, that is, without doubt, rooted in prejudice and bigotry.

Newsflash...racial profiling is bigotry.

Newsflash...that is the case, no matter the ethnicity being profiled.

No, 6 were arrested on overstay.

30 were detained for questioning because of their colour.

so 20% were guilty and the rest were freed after being checked…all tarred with the same brush maybe? If Britain and other European countries did this they wouldn’t have 250,000illegal immigrants!!

The problem is that black Africans are apparently overrepresented among foreigners that commit crimes in Thailand so then all people that are black and/or from Africa get a problem with the police/immigration, no matter if they are white South Africans or a black Americans they will suffer because people from Nigerian and Ghana are over-represented among those who commit crimes. In the district where I live they don't allow black teachers anymore, that is after all (8) African (black) teachers working in the area ended up in the slammer at least once last year, and it was for anything from drunk driving to aggravated assault and "sleeping" with students...

So don't blame the cops, blame the people that give people of color a bad name!!!

You just made the whole thing up.

You have no idea as to whether they are over-represented or under-represented.

So you just make it up as you go along.

You think 'people of colour' are over-represented for when it comes to drunk driving, fighting and sleeping with students or other near natives for money?

I don't think so.

No problem with arresting and deporting overstayers (all 6 of those out of the number arrested), however basing arrests on the basis of colour is bigotry.

No in these circumstances it is common sense.

Black/coloured? I was once having a conversation in a London pub with a US gent, briefly mentioning South Africa I used the word coloureds. He was mightily offended until I was patient enough to educate him. Thick git.

bigotry:  intolerance toward those who hold different opinions from oneself.

prejudice: 1.  preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.

                 2. dislike, hostility, or unjust behavior deriving from unfounded opinions.

f members of any group known statistically to engage in crime

at a higher percentage that the norm are questioned when found in an

area known to be inhabited by said group engaging in criminal activity,

then the questioning is certainly reasonable.  this scenario is based

on reason and actual experience.

i assume any detentions were for those found to have drugs/weapons

in possession, or not to have valid identification......NOT on the basis

of color, as only 30 were detained (out of how many questioned?) at

15 dens of iniquity.

In certain areas and in certain circumstances black Africans are statistically likely to be here illegally and/or engaged in criminal acts. Parts of Bangkok differ from the Student's Union bar, surprising as it may seem.

Nothing there justifies racial profiling.

No idea what goes on in a student bar, I don’t drink.

Why do you mention it?
