A staff member of Transparency Thailand on Thursday (Jan 25) dismissed criticism that its decision to pull out of Transparency International’s (TI) memberships was to appease the National Council for Peace and Order.

Kanokkan Anukansai, of an assistant to Prof Juree Vichit-Vadakan, secretary-general of Transparency Thailand, clarified that it was not true that the Thai organization withdrew from TI’s memberships because it was not satisfied with TI’s latest corruption perception index (CPI) which downgraded Thailand to 101st ranking with just 35 scores out of 100 because of corruption problem in government bureaucracy.

She also denied that the foundation wanted to appease the junta.

The trafficking business as usual must continue, you pesky pesky EU.....

Whatever they specifically deny you know is true.

They're so transparent!!

Thailand drops below Indonesia and level with the Philippines. That is an indictment.

This incident is a good example of how middle class Thais in NGO's can easily be pressured within Thailand's patronage network with weak rule of law. They know their jobs, income streams and status can be withheld or damaged.

You can run, but you can't hide.

What a strange, strange story -- totally lacking in any substance.

Even more bizarrely, it occurred almost two years ago, but is being reported only now. Yet TI still puts out a report which includes Thailand, so that begs the question of whether Transparency Thailand is actually needed by TI.

Thailand may rejoin the TI in the future ' if approached' . Is that why they are announcing this withdrawal 2 years late?

Typical Thailand junta response to unpleasant news. Their childlike solution is to disassociate with themselves from the information source of the unpalatable news.

Do they seriously believe that by disaffiliating from Transparency International that they will stop publishing the shameful and embarrassing corruption ratings for Thailand.

Foreign investors are NOT attracted to countries with high levels of government corruption. But why should the government care so long as their official's pockets are full to overflowing.

No-one noticed that  they had left.

They picked up their bat and ball, went home, and have now commenced to wail...nobody loves me..

Their statistics were probably worthless anyway.

Other countries without an affiliate organisation include Iran, Angola and the USA.

She said that the pullout was due to difference in working system and direction, but declined to elaborate

In other words the TI were too close to the truth for comfort

That's our feeling.  Dealing with Thailand from the outside, rather than inside the country, has been far easier.

The best is to build a high wall around the kingdom. No phones, no internet, no TV. Only primary school allowed.. No foreigners.

looking at the map on thread start there is a few places only "highly ethical" left in this world - they are the most difficult and expensive ones to invest in...
