Fraudsters this week hacked the Facebook accounts of two Nakhon Pathom residents and tricked their online friends into sending almost Bt100,000 to unverified bank accounts.

Construction contractor Chamnan Kaewdonprai, 49, filed a complaint with Khamphaengsaen police after someone posing as his friend Chaninan Rodpol has contacted him via private Facebook message, asking to borrow Bt28,400.

He transferred the money on Thursday afternoon to a bank account registered in the name Chid Taeng-on, as requested.

Only when he phoned Chaninan to ask about repayment did he learn that she’d made no such request.

Chainan told him she’d been unable to access her Facebook account since Wednesday morning and had discovered it was being used to “borrow” money from other friends under false pretences.

Chainan had already alerted Bang Len police that her friend Pornpat Phosithong had wired Bt14,500 to Chid and Weeraphot Pornpipatmankhong Bt3,500 to Chid and Bt11,000 to another bank account in the name Thawatchai Eiumsa-ard.

Yet another victim of the same scam has emerged.

Sitthipol Noi-ampai, 41, of Bang Len district said someone posing as him on Facebook had asked his younger brother for a loan on January 22.

The brother called Sitthipol for confirmation, so no money changed hands.

But the next day, Sitthipol’s friend Pattaraporn Sukhaboon told him she’d received a request to borrow Bt24,700 and had wired it to Thawatchai’s bank account.
