Bigwigs gather and declare Mae Sot has the worst pollution in Thailand

Disaster Mitigation officials, the military, medics and other authorities gathered in the border area of Mae Sot to declare that the area was the worst polluted place in Thailand.

They came to the Mae Sot airport to witness one of the answers to the problem - shooting lots of water droplets up into the air to bring the dust crashing down to earth.

Firemen were also on the scene to blast lots of water into the smoke and dust particles.

Following this the army from Region 9 took everyone up for an exciting helicopter ride to see the extent of slash and burn farming.

It was deemed a great success, said Sanook.

This is not a good new article.  What kind of pollution? PM2.5?  If so, where are the data to show that Mai Sot has the worst PM2.5 pollution in Thailand and how does it compare with other hot-spots eg Khon Kaen, Saraburi, and Lampang? By what objective measure was it deemed 'a great success'? Who is Sanook?

Mae Sots air pollution is deep red for almost 3 weeks now. This is unusual as Mae Sot is surrounded by pristine jungles left right and centre. Sugar cane fields clearing is the most likely culprit. This gotta stop.

Pretty sure that it's the big neighbor to their left that is causing the problem

A pity it doesn't bring down to earth all of the idiots charged with (ir)responsibility for health and environment. They might just come up with a half-intelligent answer to the problem - like enforcing a complete ban on slash and burn with swingeing penalties imposed for any and all breaches of the ban.

Sugar cane fields clearing-burning.  This gotta stop.

There is an improvement today, 'only' 91 for PM2.5.

Don't know, but may be the wind has changed?

Any idea if there might be an influence through Mae Mo lignite mine and the power plant near Lampang?

I always feel pleased for these freeloading government bigwigs poncing around investigating anything they care to nominate. At the end of the day all it amounts to is an all-expenses-paid joyride in a helicopter followed by an all-you-can eat prawn buffet lunch attended by lovely ladies. And then later back home to the missus with a stolen bagfull of prawns to try to salvage matrimonial harmony. I know about these things.
