Video: Tourist has just two words (repeatedly) for cabby who won't turn on the meter

The problem of taxi drivers still refusing to turn on the meter was graphically shown in a video shared widely on Thai social media.

 

A tourist and his partner had been told to get out of a taxi after the driver refused to use the meter.

 

A woman started filming as a male tourist repeatedly left doors open on the passenger side to make a point about how angry he was.

 

And he had two words most Thais recognize these days

 

"F@@@ You!".

 

These were repeated several times as a security guard shut the doors and tried to defuse the situation.

 

TNews said this highlighted the continuing problem of taxis not using meters and added that it was fortunate that this case did not end in violence.

It looks like somewhere on Sukhumvit. Actually it is normal many of them don't use the meter there. If the guy had waited for a moving taxi maybe this doesn't happen. Maybe not nice but in some areas in fact taxis insist on getting a set fare for a trip.

Always make clear you want the meter used before you get in a taxi, if they won’t, don’t get in. 

 

Continuously opening the the doors open was a stupid, petulant act. 

 

Wonder who was filming? Seems like they knew what was going to happen.

Absolute divy. 

 

I used to get annoyed by taxi drivers, now I just ignore them if they try to charge a ridiculous price. It certainly isn't worth the risk. A friend of my wife's (young Thai guy) got shot in the leg by a taxi driver a few years ago for arguing over the meter. As foreigners it is better to shut up and not be a gobshite.

This is a tricky situation. Do nothing, and the problem might increase as the resistance becomes less. Do something and risk a baseball bat in the face and/or ten others joining in.

1 we don't know well if he was right or wrong

2 even if the driver is 1000 times wrong, it does not give a right to offend him

Not even when you are wrong? You are a dangerous person who should be removed from the public domain, let alone be allowed to roam freely in Thailand or any other country for that matter.

It is wrong to believe that every slight should be returned in kind.  True greatness does not come from serving justice to every offender; it comes in being gracious toward others, compassionate of their needs and problems, sensitive to their circumstances, and in having courtesy and respect toward all while exercising restraint of one's naturally selfish passions.  Moreover, there is greater honor in defending someone else than in defending oneself, just as it is better not to toot one's own horn.  In this case, the driver who exercised restraint in not doing unto others as they had done unto him shows himself the greater.

1. Ask before you get in meter or set rate.

2. If they play games and don't set the meter, get out.

3. Always take a photo of the ID and cab number to protect yourself. First lesson learned in Asia.

4. Most drivers are hustling just trying to make a living. I personally was saved from a certain beating and being robbed by a cabbie who stopped a man who had slipped something into my cola at the Muay Thai fight and then followed me out and was attempting to push me down an alley. The driver jumped out of his cab, fought the man off and got me back to my hotel safely. He wouldn't take anything for helping me. He was an older man and he apologized for what his countryman tried to do. Each driver is responsible for their own actions and so are we. Walk carefully or take the bus if you don't like the taxi experience.

I take it that 96 refers to the year that you were born in .

Whilst I do agree that its wrong, abusive and unpleasant for someone to yell abuse at you , you just not let it upset you and just walk/drive away.

   Some people may be annoyed , agitated or upset about something and become abusive towards you, even if it has nothing to do with you .

   If someone is acting stupid , dont respond by acting stupid as well , be the bigger man and walk away

If he doesn't turn on the meter (mind you: he is sitting in a taxi...meter...it sayeth so, on top of every taxi!), he is in the wrong!

But ..okay...you are right: all these good people don't deserve name- calling!

After all, they are wonderful Thais!

(...and no: I am not bashing! I met a bunch of good and friendly taxi- drivers ...and a great-a-bunch of a- holes, who deserve a loud and clear ...whatever he said!
