BANGKOK — Employees who lost their job in a pay dispute with General Motors Thailand will be rehired, the company said Sunday, with one caveat: they have to sign new contracts on a military base.

The notice informed all rehired employees to report to an army base in Chonburi province Tuesday. The order caused some alarm among workers who fear being coerced by soldiers to sign unfair contracts. A company spokeswoman said the venue was picked only for convenience.

company spokespeople are highly paid professional liars; reflects remarkably stupid and not-clued-in-to-current-thailand of the company

If GMH, Japanese or Korean company et al don't build the cars in Thailand there would be none made. The Thais are quite incapable of doing such all by themselves. They need foreign investment and foreign partners. Without them they are helpless.

Never torment me with a GM Car or Ford.:coffee1:

A bit of an exaggeration. With regards to automotive manufacturing, this is much more than know how. It requires mountains of capital and establishing deep purchasing and distribution channels. Even Delorean could not pull it off, despite the help of his cocaine distribution efforts. Automotive, Aero, sophisticated silicon chips, etc., are all industries few countries have the resources to step up to.

On the other hand Thais have established endless companies manufacturing a myriad of products. And have done so with some measure of competency.
