Rangsiman released on bail despite police request

Political activist Rangsiman Rome, a leader of pro-election demonstrations, on Monday was released on Bt50,000 bail.

 

The Criminal Court granted permission after his lawyer requested Rangsiman be temporarily released.

 

Rangsiman, 25, who leads the Democracy Restoration Group, is accused by police of violating the junta ban on political gatherings of five or more people and instigating public disturbances. 

 

He led a street protest near Democracy Monument on February 10, where he joined other rally leaders in campaigning for an election this year and for the government to step down.

 

The young activist denied all the charges while being interrogated by police.

 

Police yesterday took him to the Criminal Court seeking his extended detention for 12 days pending completion of their investigation and the questioning of witnesses. 

 

The court granted the police request but later allowed the suspect to be released on bail without any additional conditions.

The glaring inequality in the Thai (in)justice system is truly staggering!

 

The fact that the gent in the op has been bailed is deemed as newsworthy is in itself very worrying as anywhere other than a military regime this would be a no brainer.....

Is the inequality in the Thai justice picture specific only to the time period the junta has been in power? No.

 

But no matter what time period unhindered unharassed non-violent and focused political protest should be the right of all.
