Yesterday i went to Mae Sai and was asked if i wanted to cross the border to check out the duty free shops, i am curious if it is required to stamp out of Thailand to visit this area.

My latest information is that the "VIP passes" have not been issued for some time, meaning that normal procedure for leaving the country has to be followed.

Check whether your visa is multiple or single entry before you attempt to leave.

I just renewed my retirement visa but never asked for a re-entry so there was no way i was going to cross and then get a 30 day stamp when coming back.

Tatchilek across the border from Mae Sai is OK if you like being surrounded by touts offering cheap whisky, cigarettes, Viagra and girls. The problem is in knowing which of the offers are genuine merchandise.

There is a good booze and confectionary shop just opposite Immigration.
