"Big Joke" takes call center fight to Dubai - and gets some arrests too!

Crime buster Surachet Hakpal swapped his police hat for a business suit and flew to Dubai on Monday to seek the cooperation of the police in the UAE in arresting call center gangs.

Surachet - deputy commissioner of the tourist police - was representing an entourage that consisted of cops involved in busting computer crime.

He gave a speech in English to an assembled gathering of Dubai police officials thanking them for their help in suppression of the gangs that are preying on Thai people using bases around the world.

A video on the Tourist Police Bureau website showed travel to a location some 20 kilometers from Dubai where a bust was made of a call center gang.

In the bust 21 Thais and a Taiwanese national were arrested.

Surachet - known as Big Joke in the Thai media - has been tasked by the government with cracking down on a wide variety of crime.

He has been seen ridding the Thai streets of foreign illegals, drug dealers and scammers - many from Africa - as well as his call center operations that have seen hundreds of arrests in recent months.

He told the Dubai authorities in his speech that busting the call center gangs was a priority for the Thai police.

And Dubai authorities said "Okay, we've done our diplomatic thing and you've had your 5 mins. On your way now, boy".

Dubai is the new haven for criminals from Europe since they know they wont get extradited from there.

Nice holiday for Surachet and his entourage. I bet they didn't fly economy class, and will be staying in a nice 5 star hotel in Dubai. Nice publicity for him arresting some small time call center gang, hardly crime of the century.

I bet the Big Joke didn't make any inquiries regarding a certain Thai Big Cheese who resides in Dubai, now that would have been newsworthy...

Whilst there he also arrested two Thai ex-prime ministers and currently filling in the papers for their extradition.

21 Thais arrested for preying on fellow Thais!

Perhaps the UAE should offer the same level of support and cooperation to Thailand that Thai  law enforcement has given western governments fighting boiler room call centres operating in Thailand for the past 20 years.

....what about murderers and billion-baht fraudsters that have been located multiple times...

...jeez....

This policeman seems serious about dealing with criminals. What's his agenda, I wonder? Why isn't he behaving like every other top cop in Thai history and just talking but doing nothing? Very strange.

No doubt the agenda is a lot of loot for himself.
