PM: no more pardons

Featured Replies

Prime Minister Hun Sen said that he will not seek pardons for the dissolved CNRP’s former members and activists who have been imprisoned. Speaking to some 10,000 garment workers in Phnom Penh on Wednesday, Mr. Hun Sen said he will not seek pardons for convicted former CNRP members who have been behind bar since former opposition leader Sam Rainsy has said the release of former opposition senator Hong Sok Hour because of the international community’s pressure.

King Norodom Sihamoni granted a royal pardon to Mr Sok Hour who was serving a seven-year prison sentence for forging a border map with Vietnam in October 2017. The King pardoned Mr Sok Hour in a Royal Decree requested by Mr Hun Sen. “I released Hong Sok Hour but they said that it was because of international community’s pressure. If you keep saying like that, I will not seek pardon for any one,” Mr Hun Sen said.

“People have been in prison in Phnom Penh. They have to stay in prison. No pardons are sought for all of you because of your bad leader so please remain in prison,” Mr. Hun Sen said. In July 2015, Phnom Penh Municipal Court convicted 11 CNRP opposition members and activists, including Meach Sovannara, former director of the CNRP’s information department.
