Two lorry drivers jailed over crash that left 8 dead on M1 motorway: BBC

(Reuters) - Two lorry drivers have been jailed over a crash on the M1 motorway in Buckinghamshire that left eight people dead last summer, the BBC reported on Friday.

Ryszard Masierak, 31, was jailed for 14 years after being found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving and David Wagstaff, 54, was sentenced to 40 months in prison after pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving, the BBC said.

Judge Francis Sheridan described Masierak as a "persistent, unmitigated, if not very accomplished liar" who had shown "no remorse", adding the driver had tried to blame everyone else, the BBC said.

Masierak was twice the drink-drive limit while Wagstaff was on a hands-free call in cruise control when their lorries collided with a minibus on August 26, 2017. All of the deceased and injured were on the minibus in the collision near the English town of Newport Pagnell, 50 miles (80 km) northwest of London.

Sheridan said the crash was one of the most serious in Britain for more than 26 years, the BBC said.

Maybe when sentences like this start getting handed out here, the death toll from accidents caused by high or drunk drivers will start to come down a little.

When 8 dead is considered one of the worst accidents in 26 years, it shows the staggering difference in driving here and in more civilised places. Thailand gets 8 or more dead in an accident every day.

Will have no effect at all, people think they're invulnerable, this would never happen to them.

The biggest shame about Brexit is the missed opportunity to completely rejig the transport system in the UK. Forget trade, that can be dealt with. Its always been unfairly weighted towards the French since idiot Heath deal in 1973 anyway. But all these dumb shit European ignorant European drivers need to get off our roads. Let's get back to using rail and even canal revitalisation to get back to realistic traffic levels on our roads. Peal back Thatcher and Blair money first policies. Free enterprise really isn't working. Look at Scandinavia for the lead.

Over 50 years of driving and operating a range of machinery I have never liked using cruise control in anything.  Add to it the mobile phone and it is a recipe for disaster.

The best thing to happen to HGVs is the cruse control. More efficient and more control. Only idiots who don’t know how to use one will say they are dangerous. Just like they said when the steam train came out . You would pass out above 10 miles per hour. With proper training it’s brilliant.

Especially ACC (automatic cruise control), it's a gift from God. I love it and use it very very often when driving here in Thailand.

Now I actually enjoy the scenery a bit more:)
