Ukrainian charged with theft

Featured Replies

Preah Sihanouk Provincial Court yesterday charged a 29-year-old Ukrainian tourist with theft following his arrest on Monday for breaking into a Chinese businessman’s home and robbing him. Heang Kosal, a provincial police officer with the criminal investigation department, identified the accused as Voloymer Behal, who entered Cambodia as a tourist in January.

Mr Kosal said the accused was charged with theft and faces six months to three years in prison if convicted. Mr Kosal noted that the suspect was arrested Monday afternoon in commune 4 after Yang Hai Wei, a 29-year-old Chinese businessman, filed a complaint against him.

Mr Kosal said that on Monday, at about 3am, the suspect allegedly broke into the victim’s home in commune 4 while people in the home were sleeping. “CCTV recordings show [Mr Behal] entering [Mr Wei’s] rented house while Mr Wei was asleep at 3am,” said Mr Kosal. “We managed to identify the suspect based on his photos which we compared to our CCTV findings.”
