Brit fugitive on the run for 12 years laughs as Cambodian cops finally nick him

A BRITISH fugitive on the run for 12 years laughs as police finally arrest him at a cannabis farm in Cambodia.

Wayne Brewer fled the UK in 2006 before he could be sentenced for an assault.

But he was nabbed yesterday at a rented house in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh.

It was at first believed that police were acting on a tip-off from a friend.

But it was later thought that Brewer was caught by chance after refusing to help a local farmer whose cow had wandered on to his land.

Briton arrested for growing marijuana

A 50-year-old British man was arrested in Phnom Penh’s Dangkor district on Friday after police raided his rental home and found him to be illegally growing marijuana. Colonel Choem Sitha, Dangkor district police chief, said yesterday that district police officers were given permission from the municipal court’s deputy prosecutor to raid the man’s home in Choeung Ek commune.

“British national Wayne Brewer, 50, was arrested on Friday,” Col Sitha said, adding that Mr Brewer was sent to the municipal court for questioning yesterday morning.

Col Sitha said that a farmer had lost his cows and went looking for them when he found the marijuana growing in buckets on Mr Brewer’s compound. The farmer then reported his discovery to district police. Another district police officer said police found marijuana growing in 25 plastic buckets while 53 other buckets had been broken from a previous marijuana harvest. Ly Sophanna, spokesman for Phnom Penh Municipal Court, said the prosecutor had already received the case and was following procedures.

Should read British man living happily in Cambodia for 12 years upsets local farmer.  He certainly should have known better and a few thousand riel would have sorted the problem out.   His stupidity was underestimating the need to always grease palms in South East Asia.  Maybe that is the reason for the wry smile.
