Thailand will earn up to 20 billion baht tourism revenues in the 5-day Songkran water festival that begins from April 12-16, according the projection by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT)’s  Tourism Marketing Research Centre.

The centre projected that domestic travels by Thai celebrants and foreign tourists during April 12-16 Songkran holidays will generate revenues  of about 19.8 billion baht, up 18 percent year-on-year.

For international tourist arrivals during the period, it expected over 530,000 foreign visitors to arrive and  join  the Thai traditional New Year celebrations.

How much for hospitals, car and scooter repairs, funerals, and "presents" for the BIB?

22,000,000 on hospital costs

Well, they won't earn anything from me apart from a cheap stock of beer from Tesco's, as I intend to stay at home with enough sustenance to last me through this period.  But as I'm not a tourist or intend to travel around, I don't count in their statistical forecasts.

I guess that thousands of human lives killed or injured on the road and elsewhere during this period is not as important as earning a few billion baht. Brain-dead TAT is really on another planet called GREED, IMO.

How do they arrive at that ridiculus figure when you think of the huge losses due to firms and businesses closing down for the holidays  and many still have to pay their employees ? Plus the extra hospital staff and police needed for the holidays

Fantasy, which is meant to show that they're doing a great job in promoting tourism in Thailand. You can fool some....

That's only 1/1000 of the quoted 22,000,000,000...'peanuts' eh? or did you read 'million' instead of 'billion'?

Johncat 1 forgot the hidden cost to Industry of the following.

1) Staff still too drunk to work when the Holiday is officially over

2) Staff Hospitalised usually for drink related accidents

3) Retraining key staff because your employee died in drink related road accident

These are just a few, and I am sure others will chip in with more.

I expect swarms of hot girls on me.  Oh expectation ?

Of this 20 billion Baht about 19 billion will be extra revenue from farang residents obliged to buy a re-entry permit in order to leave the country for the duration.
