Looking for precal math tutor

Featured Replies

I am taking a correspondence precal math class. I am looking for a tutor.

I am a 35 year old Canadian man, living in Bangkok near On Nut BTS. I am willing to do the commuting (within reason).

I'm not working and I am in Bangkok for some personal projects. My schedule is very flexible.

Anyone interested or know anyone who is? Providing an hourly rate is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

back in the old days one would go to a notice board at the math dept of a local university and post a notice for a tutor...plenty of undergraduates around that would like that kinda work and in Thailand the folks that you would want would probably have fair to middlin' english language skills...there's probably a way to post the same query electronically these days...

'precal' means pre calculus? then we're talkin' multi variable algebra, log functions, trig including periodic functions, series, etc which are difficult items to put across for all but the most capable of instructors...almost impossible for a casual tutor...need to have plenty of clear examples and exercises that can be reviewed by the instructor...probably very hard to simulate in a correspondence scenario...

in america we useta have what were called university 'extension' classes meaning that they were not necessarily part of a degree program, open to the general public and taught by professional instructors with the same rigor as a degree program class; pre requisites were recommended but not required, if you aren't up to it then you just lose yer money which was considerable, much more than one had to pay for a regular degree program... any academic credit was transferable to a regular degree program...might want to look around to see if the same arrangement is offered locally in Thailand...many tech/math/science courses are now universally taught in English per discussions that I've had with technical graduates in the ME and in Asia...

also there are 'study guides' many of which have a lot of worked out examples that may be helpful...check the internet for publishers...

If i was in country I would help.  BS engineering, MS math.  Taught calculus and pre calculus while a graduate assistant while getting my Masters.  Still working in the engineering industry at my ripe young age of 61, but very current on anything you would need.   Tutoring is exactly the type of thing I would love to do in semi-retirement over in Thailand, to keep me  busy, to make a little money even though I don't need it since my retirement is fully funded, and to help people.  Sadly, Thailand makes it very difficult to tutor as an independent

I've also thought about assisting students locally with math and english...alas, thai work permit requirements defeat any good intentions in that regard, even voluntary efforts...

enabling students to get a grasp of basic algebra and to set their foot firmly on the first rung of the ladder of applied mathematics would be wonderful...an associate in California is currently voluntarily involved in these efforts in retirement...and I envy him...

I just moved here, Chiang Mai, and there are opportunities to teach with some NGO's. I'm teaching Burmese refugee teenagers GED math and it's very rewarding and keeps me busy.
