UK could launch retaliatory cyber attack on Russia if infrastructure targeted - Sunday Times

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain would consider launching a cyber attack against Russia in retaliation if Russia targeted British national infrastructure, the Sunday Times reported, citing unnamed security sources.

Britain's relations with Russia are at a historic low, after it blamed Russia for a nerve agent attack on former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in England, prompting mass expulsions of diplomats.

Russia has denied involvement, and on Saturday also condemned strikes against Syria by Western powers, which Britain took part in.

Cyber security has become a focal point of the strained relations. On Thursday, a British spy chief said that his GCHQ agency would "continue to expose Russia's unacceptable cyber behaviour", adding there would be increasing demand for its cyber expertise.

The Sunday Times also said that British spy officials had been preparing for Russia-backed hackers to release embarrassing information on politicians and other high-profile people since the attack on the Skripals.

That's it, keep cranking up the war machine. But remember, if the balloon goes up, Russia has drilled its population in civil defence and built bunkers to house the entire population of Moscow.

Over to you, Theresa and the Mayor of London.

Them drills been on for ages. Whether or not people take them seriously, or whether they'll act as supposed to under crisis are other matters. Should think about as efficient as elsewhere, meaning so so at best). As far as I understand, the protection afforded to the great unwashed is hardly state of the art or anything. The elite apparently enjoys a much improved, separate system (this bit pretty much the same everywhere).

Anyway, this isn't about WWIII or a nuclear attack, but more related to possible retaliation moves by Russia, on the cyber front. With cyber attacks, seems like hitting the other side isn't as troublesome as defending against incoming attacks. I'd guess that the statement was made as some sort of an attempt at deterrence. Doubt it will serve this purpose, though.

Bit of an odd headline/statement to make surely - basically if Russia attack us we might retaliate?

Pretty much echoes Russia's statements prior to the attack in Syria. Don't know that someone called these odd.

Unless mistaken, in previous instances were infrastructure was targeted by cyber attacks, there was no much by way of overt response in kind. The statement says now there might be. If the "norm" up to now was whinging about it, pointing fingers and trying to improve defenses, then this is a departure from previous strategy.

Less worried about nuclear war (which pretty much everyone understands is not a good idea), but this.... can get very ugly real quick, and not much experience or rules to govern what's on and what's not. Disrupting services can result in some major league havoc.

Bring it on I say. Most of these politicians and establishment people are just the type of infrastructure that needs showing up for what they really are, and getting rid of. Let's get that swamp drained .

Oh, they don't need to resort to fake stuff to expose most of the British establishment. There is a wealth of dirt on them that the Western msm know about, but won't publish .

So if they will not publish. And you Belive all that is printed in news papers. How did you find out about the dirt.

I'm sure there's some. Then again, you seem quite willing to embrace whatever is published by Russia regarding pretty much anything. Wouldn't be all too hard to slip in some fake stories, given such an attitude. Extreme partisan views and lack of critical thinking are great enablers of these activities as well.

By the looks of it, you appear just as willing to embrace whatever is published on this side of the fence.

What else would you expect to hear from a "former White House Advisor", the Pentagon, the Telegraph and Sky News? Fine for bias confirmation, but all about as independent as RT.

Same knee-jerk reactions.

Not really, I'm not engaged in wholesale denials of Western misdeed and wrongdoing, and I don't have much issues accepting the West ain't angelic. Also not much into the conspiracy theories some of you are infatuated with.

And no, the Telegraph and Sky News are not on par with RT. RT is a Russian government operation. Until RT engages in some critical reporting of Russian government policies and agenda, your "point" is bogus.

I wasn't defending RT, but if you consider the UK mainstream media an unbiased fount of truth and wisdom (let alone the Pentagon and "a former White House advisor"), your opinions clearly need to be taken with a pinch of salt. And half a pot of pepper.

You were comparing RT with UK media. That's a bogus comparison no matter how you wish to spin it. Mainstream media is not necessarily state owned, nor does it shy away from criticizing government. Further, it does not speak in one voice, there are mainstream media outlets pandering to various leanings. There was nothing whatsoever claimed about it being an "unbiased fount of truth and wisdom" - just another one of your dishonest inserts tossed in. The position advocated is that they are better, not perfect. Try harder.

You have to get away from the msm. Private Eye is often a good starting point.
