BANGKOK, 23rd April 2018 (NNT) - Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has instructed his economics team to strike a balance between its support for foreign and domestic investors, after the government struck a deal with Alibaba Group on e-commerce and the Smart Digital Hub project.

Gen Prayut stressed that the government must protect the interests of Thai investors and SMEs and that the aim of the country’s investment support policy should be to create an environment that encourages competition and economic balance.

Gen Prayut noted that Alibaba intends to support the potential of new entrepreneurs and promote Thai products that are popular in China, including jasmine rice, durian, and other items that have quickly sold out on the Chinese e-commerce platform.

The premier urged Thai businesses to raise their level of competitiveness and confirmed the government's support for the Thailand 4.0 development agenda. The government has also encouraged Thai businesses to engage with foreign investors to exchange knowledge and expertise, in order to improve on their business models.

Doublespeak for Jack Ma was able to pay a bigger kickback than Jeff Bezos, because China doesn't have strong anti-corruption laws and enforcement mechanisms that extend into foreign countries.

Prayut's timing is perfect - after

He hands a multi-billion baht monopoly to Alibaba, then expresses concern for Thai businesses.

Better "safe than sorry" when dealing with China?

The Minister of Commerce Apiradi Tantraporn should resign in protest.

A business-to-business e-marketplace called Thaitrade.com had been established to expand market opportunities for Thai products. Since beginning operations in 2011, it has amassed 19,550 Thai suppliers and 118,454 global buyers, and generates projected sales of about BT2bn ($56.3m).

Prayut's deal with Alibaba seems to undercut Commerce's efforts towards Thailand 4.0.

Maybe Prayut should make Jack Ma honorary minister of commerce.

Events constantly overtake him and he responds with protectionist comments to please his masters. I dont hear any positive good ideas which will boost jobs, education or health care for the av Thai.

Well, he should know . . . Thailand's PRETENDER PM, who likes people to think he knows more than Einstein and Aristotle when, in fact, he can barely tell his arse from his mouth, there's so much rubbish comes out of each.

He's out for the goose who lays the golden egg, Thai politicians all have one two things in common, lies and money, more of either is the norm

This time he is playing a very dangerous game. When the camel gets its nose under the tent pretty soon it is all the  way in. The Thai economy may see a sharp spike in agriculture as this venture takes off, then a severe drop with out a rebound as the Chinese rarely look to share their good fortune, which means the Thais will do the work and the Chinese will reap the rewards.
