I'm looking for good places to do my next few SETVs.   Some questions about Vientiane and Savannakhet.

  1. About how many visas will each place issue you in one passport?
  2. Do visas from other consulates affect your chances here?  How?
  3. Is it better to fly back or cross by land?

I'm a Canadian.  Many visas in my old passport.  New passport has just 1 visa from Vientiane.  I plan to move around more in the future, but just in case, I'd like to optimize visas for a longer term stay in Thailand.

Thanks in advance.

You could get one from Yangon or Ho Chi Minh City. Be sure to read up on what those places will ask u for as far as onward ticket, bank statement, and accomodation booking. Ho Chi Minh requires a ticket into Thailand as well even if by bus. Hong Kong and Bali seem to be ok for getting tourist visas too.

Going to other embassies lets you save one or two more times for getting a visa easily at Vientiane since they don't ask for any extra documents. But after 3-4 visas Vientiane will likely put a warning stamp with your visa.

Lastly, the other consuate in Laos seems to be ok as well. In Savannakhet they will ask to see a bank statement showing 20000 baht, and maybe an onward ticket plus accommodation booking.

There is no published limit, but as a general rule you should expect 3-4 before they start warnings or denying visas.

Probably not.

You could, albeit unlikely, get denied entry doing it either way.  There is less hassle if you get denied at a land border.

Vientiane and Savannakhet seem to go be a physical count of visas in your passport so you should have a problem getting a new visa from either location.

Do you mean "you should NOT have a problem getting a new visa"?  Thank you

If you already have 1 in your new PP you should have no problem getting 2 more from Vientiane without problems, generally after 4 they will issue you the "Red Stamp" warning which means you will not get any more from there in your current PP,  I got 4 from there before I received this stamp, some people I have spoke to got 5 before they got this stamp, it's the luck of the draw

After that it has been suggested that Savanakhet will still issue you at least 1 (I don't know if they will issue any more after that) as long as you meet their requirements

As for entering Thailand again I would strongly advise you not to use Airports using International flights, domestic flights are fine, the border at Nong Khai is very friendly towards repeated TV holders, the vast majority of reported issues are happening at Airports, the majority of these are for people using VE however I would still be wary if staying here on repeated TV's

I can also not recollect recent reports of anyone having issues at the Savan border

Yes, I meant 'should not have a problem'.

Good info there thanks.

When you say you got 4 from Vientiane before a red stamp, do you mean they issued you the 4th along with a red stamp?  Or that you got 4 smoothly and then got the red stamp with the 5th.

I got the red stamp on the 4th from there using the same PP,  so I got the 4th along with the Red Stamp (which is actually black and can be easily missed if you are not looking for it)

The "Red stamp" is a warning that you will not receive anymore from there in the same PP,  if you try again with the same PP you will 100% not receive one

However if you get a new PP, the process starts again from there so you can get another 4

This has been the same for yeas however in the current climate things can change at anytime so always check for the latest info, this forum is a good place for that
